Chapter 4 - The Bitter Truth

The light from the study spilled across the dark floor, illuminating Cameron’s pale face and wide, terrified eyes.
Matteo stood motionless for a heartbeat, his analytical gaze taking in her shivering form, her hand clutched tightly over her pocket, and the heavy knit sweater she had thrown over her sleepwear.
"Cameron," Matteo said, his voice low and dangerous. "What are you doing in this hallway?"
From behind him, Marco stepped into the light, his massive hand already resting on the butt of his firearm. His scarred face was twisted in a suspicious, ugly sneer. "Do you want me to handle this, boss? She was eavesdropping. That's a violation of the house rules."
"Go back to the security room, Marco," Matteo commanded, not taking his eyes off Cameron. "I will handle this."
Marco hesitated, his dark eyes lingering on Cameron with a menacing intensity before he bowed his head. "Yes, boss." He turned and walked down the hall, his heavy boots echoing off the marble before disappearing into the service elevator.
Matteo walked toward Cameron, his presence overwhelming in the narrow corridor. He stopped only inches away from her, his shadow completely swallowing her.
"I asked you a question, Cameron," Matteo said, his voice dropping into a quiet, lethal register that made her knees shake. "Why are you out of your quarters? I told you the hallways of this house are not safe at night."
Cameron swallowed the lump of panic in her throat. She knew that if she lied now, she would lose his trust forever—and with it, her mother’s life support and her chance to protect Leo.
"I wasn't eavesdropping, Mr. Duca," she whispered, her voice trembling but determined. "I was trying to leave the building to get this tested."
She slowly reached into her pocket and pulled out the small, sterile plastic container of milk, holding it out between them.
Matteo frowned, his gaze shifting from her face to the container. "What is that?"
"It's the milk Mrs. Gable gave Leo this afternoon," Cameron said, her voice gaining strength. "She called it a 'supplement.' But I spent six months on a pediatric clinical rotation, Mr. Duca. I know what a child looks like when they are being over-medicated. Leo’s tantrums, his sudden lethargy, his violent mood swings... they aren't just trauma. He is being drugged."
Matteo’s face went entirely still. It was the terrifying calm of a predator before it strikes. "Explain."
"The supplement Mrs. Gable gives him is a high-dose sedative," Cameron said, her eyes locked onto his. "I can smell the chemical base beneath the vanilla. I have a friend who works in the toxicology lab at New York Presbyterian. I was going to take this to him tonight to get a full chemical analysis. I didn't tell you because I didn't have proof yet, and I knew you wouldn't believe a former maid over your head housekeeper."
Matteo stared at the container in her hand, his eyes burning with a sudden, devastating fire. "She told me it was a mild herbal relaxant to help him sleep. Prescribed by Dr. Mercer."
"Dr. Mercer was hired by Mrs. Gable after your wife died, wasn't he?" Cameron asked softly.
Matteo didn't answer. He reached out and took the container from her hand, his fingers brushing hers with a sudden, tight grip.
"Come with me," he said, turning and walking back into his study.
Cameron followed him, closing the heavy doors behind her. Matteo walked over to his desk, picked up a secure, encrypted satellite phone, and dialed a number.
"Dr. Aris," Matteo said, his voice a cold, sharp blade. "I need a private, secure toxicology sweep of a liquid sample. I want you at the penthouse in ten minutes. Bring your mobile analysis kit. If anyone asks, you are conducting a routine medical check on my son."
He hung up the phone and turned to face Cameron, his hands resting on the edge of the mahogany desk.
"If you are wrong about this, Cameron," Matteo said, his eyes drilling into hers, "you will have accused my most loyal servant of treason. The consequences for that are severe."
"And if I'm right, Mr. Duca?" Cameron asked, her chin tilted high. "What are the consequences for a woman who has been systematically destroying your son's brain to keep him quiet?"
Matteo’s jaw tightened, the muscle jumping beneath his scarred skin. "If you are right, Cameron... Mrs. Gable will not live to see the sunrise."
The next two hours were the longest of Cameron’s life.
Dr. Aris, a quiet, older man with a medical case and an air of absolute discretion, arrived through the private residential elevator. He didn't ask questions. He simply set up his mobile testing equipment on the side table in the study, took the sample from Matteo, and began the chemical analysis.
Matteo stood by the window, his back to the room, staring out at the rain-slicked towers of the city. He looked like a statue of black stone, his presence so heavy that Cameron could barely breathe.
Finally, the machine let out a quiet, rhythmic beep.
Dr. Aris looked at the screen, his face turning pale beneath his gray hair. He turned to Matteo, his voice shaking slightly.
"Mr. Duca," the doctor said, holding up the analysis report. "The sample contains a highly concentrated solution of Chloral Hydrate."
Matteo didn't turn around. "What is that?"
"It is a powerful, old-school sedative," Dr. Aris explained, his voice tight. "It was used decades ago in psychiatric clinics, but it has been heavily restricted due to its extreme toxicity. At this concentration, a daily dose would cause severe neurological damage in a three-year-old child. It mimics the symptoms of severe developmental regression, lethargy, and extreme cognitive impairment. If the boy had continued taking this for another six months... his respiratory system would have failed. It would have looked like a tragic, accidental heart attack in his sleep."
A terrifying sound broke the silence of the room.
It was a low, guttural laugh from Matteo. He slowly turned around, his face completely pale, his eyes pitch black with an ancient, murderous rage.
"She was killing my son," Matteo whispered, his voice so quiet it was almost a sigh, yet it carried the weight of a death sentence. "She was killing my boy while I was out protecting this family."
"Matteo," Dr. Aris said gently, his hands raised in a calming gesture. "The damage is not permanent. The brain of a three-year-old is highly resilient. If we stop the doses immediately and begin a gentle detox protocol, he will make a full recovery. His speech, his motor skills, his emotional stability... they will all return."
Matteo didn't seem to hear him. He looked at Cameron, his dark eyes filled with a sudden, devastating vulnerability that shattered his cold, mafia boss facade.
"You saved him," Matteo said, his voice cracking slightly. "You saved my son, Cameron."
"I did what anyone would do," Cameron whispered, her eyes filling with tears of relief.
"No," Matteo said, walking toward her, his steps heavy. He stopped only inches away, looking down at her with an intensity that made her breath catch. "Fourteen women came into this house. They only saw the money, the power, or the danger. They saw my son as a paycheck or a problem. You saw him as a child. You saw his pain."
He reached out, his broad, warm hand gently cupping the side of her face. His thumb brushed a tear from her cheek, his touch surprisingly soft, almost reverent.
"I will never forget this, Cameron," Matteo whispered. "You are no longer just an employee in this house. You are under my personal protection. Anyone who touches you, touches me."
May you like
Before Cameron could answer, the door of the study was thrown open.
Marco stood in the doorway, his face pale, his chest heaving with exertion. "Matteo, we have a problem. The security feeds in the nursery wing... they’ve been cut. And Mrs. Gable’s private car just left the underground garage."
