Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Empire

Forty-eight hours after the fall on the courthouse steps, the Harrington Commercial Group was no longer an empire. It was a carcass being torn apart by wolves.

The news of the corporate fraud, the offshore money laundering, and the horrific assault on Khloe Harrington had dominated every media outlet in the state. Protesters stood outside the company’s luxury developments, carrying signs demanding justice for Khloe and her baby. Major investors, desperate to distance themselves from the scandal, had pulled their funding from every active project, triggering a domino effect of bankruptcies across Richard's subsidiary companies.

Richard sat in his empty, dark house in Lower Merion. The staff had all quit after their paychecks bounced. The power had been cut to the outer gates, and the security systems were silent.

He had a glass of whiskey in his hand, his eyes red and unfocused as he stared at the television screen.

"...and in a stunning development today, federal authorities have officially seized the personal estate of Richard Harrington, including his multi-million-dollar mansion in Lower Merion and his luxury penthouse in Manhattan. This comes after Vanessa Kensington, Harrington’s mistress, signed a full confession detailing a multi-year conspiracy to defraud his pregnant wife, Khloe Cole Harrington, of her rightful inheritance..."

Richard threw the glass of whiskey at the television. The screen shattered, the picture dissolving into a chaotic web of colored lines before going black.

"You bitch!" he screamed into the empty house, his voice cracking with a manic, desperate fury. "You ruined everything!"

The heavy mahogany front doors of the mansion groaned, the lock clicking open.

Richard froze. He reached into his desk drawer, pulling out a small, silver revolver he had kept for security. "Who’s there?" he called out, his voice shaking.

The doors swung open, and Harrison Cole walked in.

He didn't have a weapon. He didn't have a police escort. He walked into the grand foyer, his eyes scanning the dusty, expensive furniture with a quiet, mocking pity.

"You’re trespassing, Cole," Richard hissed, raising the revolver with both hands, his aim shaking wildly. "I’ll shoot you. I swear to God, I’ll shoot you."

"With what, Richard?" Harrison asked, walking toward him without a trace of fear. "A gun registered to a corporate shell company that now belongs to the United States government? Go ahead. Pull the trigger. It’ll save the state the cost of your trial."

Richard’s hands shook so violently the gun barrel wobbled. "Why are you doing this to me? I loved her! In the beginning, I really did! But she was so weak... always crying, always breaking down over those miscarriages... I couldn't take it anymore! I deserved a life! I deserved to be happy!"

"You deserved nothing," Harrison said, stepping within arm's reach of the gun. He reached out, his hand wrapping around the barrel of the revolver, his grip so strong and steady that Richard couldn't pull the trigger. Harrison slowly but firmly twisted the weapon out of Richard’s hand, tossing it onto the floor.

"You married my sister because you thought her silence was a weakness," Harrison said, his voice quiet but filled with a terrifying, ancient power. "You thought because she was gentle, she was easy to break. But you forgot one thing, Richard."

Harrison stepped closer, his eyes locking onto Richard’s with the finality of a iron gate slamming shut.

"She is a Cole," Harrison whispered. "And we do not break. We endure. And when we are pushed... we destroy."

The sound of sirens began to wail in the distance, their red and blue lights reflecting off the high windows of the dark mansion.

"The police are here to arrest you for conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, Richard," Harrison said, turning his back on him. "I suggest you wear your warmest coat. The cells in the county jail get very cold at night."
