Chapter 3 - The Freeze

The offices of Harrington Commercial Group occupied the top three floors of the Comcast Technology Center, a soaring monument to wealth and power. But on this particular morning, the atmosphere inside the glass-and-steel fortress felt less like a corporate empire and more like a sinking ship.
Richard Harrington stood in his corner office, his hands trembling as he stared at the red numbers flashing across his computer screen.
"What do you mean, frozen?" Richard roared into his phone, his voice echoing off the floor-to-ceiling windows. "I have a fifty-million-dollar payroll due on Friday! I have three concrete pours scheduled for the waterfront development tomorrow! How can a private attorney freeze my corporate accounts?"
"It’s not just a private attorney, Richard," his chief financial officer, Arthur Vance, replied, his voice shaking over the speakerphone. "It’s Harrison Cole. He didn't file a standard civil injunction. He filed an emergency RICO petition under the state’s corporate fraud act, citing international money laundering and asset dissipation. He convinced a federal judge that you were actively hiding marital assets offshore to defraud your wife."
"That's a lie!" Richard screamed, slamming his fist onto his mahogany desk. "The offshore transfers were legitimate consulting fees for Vanessa’s design firm!"
"The judge didn't think so," Arthur said quietly. "Especially not after Harrison submitted the server logs from your private cloud account. Richard... he has everything. He has the receipts from the St. Barts trip, the wire transfers to the Panama shell companies, and the messages where you and Vanessa talked about 'getting rid of the dead weight.'"
Richard’s blood ran cold. The phone slipped slightly in his sweaty palm. "How... how did he get those?"
"Khloe," Arthur replied. "She must have copied the drive weeks ago. Richard, the board of directors is panicking. The stock is down twenty percent in pre-market trading, and the city just suspended our building permits for the entire North Avenue project. We are bleeding five hundred thousand dollars an hour."
Before Richard could answer, the heavy double doors of his office burst open.
Four federal agents in windbreakers bearing the letters IRS-CI stepped into the room, followed by two armed US Marshals. Behind them walked Harrison Cole.
Harrison had changed his suit. He now wore a crisp, dark navy pinstripe that made him look like a shadow cast across the bright office. His face was entirely expressionless, his eyes cool and empty as they locked onto Richard.
"Richard Harrington," the lead federal agent said, pulling a folded document from his pocket. "We have a federal warrant for the seizure of all electronic devices, financial records, and physical servers located on these premises. You are officially under investigation for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, tax evasion, and money laundering."
Richard backed away, his back hitting the glass window. "You can't do this! This is a civil divorce matter! My wife—"
"Your wife is currently in a medically induced coma, fighting for her life," Harrison’s voice cut through the room like a physical blow. He walked slowly toward Richard, his steps silent on the thick carpet. "And my niece is currently in a neonatal incubator, breathing through a machine because your mistress decided to push her down thirty marble steps."
"I didn't tell Vanessa to do that!" Richard stammered, his eyes darting to the marshals for protection. "I was shocked! I tried to stop her!"
"You stood at the top of those stairs and watched her bleed, Richard," Harrison said, his voice dropping to a whisper that made the federal agents look uncomfortable. "You didn't call an ambulance. You didn't kneel beside her. Your first phone call was to your criminal defense attorney to ask if your prenuptial agreement was still valid if she died before the divorce was finalized."
Harrison stepped closer, until he was standing only inches away from the man who had spent six years pretending to love his sister.
"You thought you were a king, Richard," Harrison whispered. "You thought because you built a few towers and bought a few politicians, you were untouchable. But I am going to tear down your towers. I am going to expose your politicians. And when I am finished, you won't even be able to afford the public defender who will represent you at your sentencing."
"You can't prove I had anything to do with the push!" Richard hissed, trying to reclaim some of his lost dignity. "Vanessa acted alone! She’s the one who went crazy!"

"We’ll see what Vanessa says when she realizes you’re not planning to pay her legal fees," Harrison said, a tiny, cold smile appearing on his lips.
He turned to the federal agents. "Take everything. If there is so much as a USB drive left in this office, I want to know why."
