CHAPTER 4: THE LAST LIE

CHAPTER 4: THE LAST LIE
The sound of the gunshot refused to disappear.
Even after the echo faded.
Even after the screaming stopped.
Even after the security team surrounded the ballroom.
Elena still heard it.
A single moment that changed everything.
Claire was on the floor.
The woman who had stolen seven years from her.
The woman who had lied.
The woman who had raised Ethan.
Was dying.
And Elena couldn’t understand why her heart was breaking.
“Claire…”
She dropped beside her.
Blood stained the expensive white carpet.
The entire ballroom watched in silence.
Daniel knelt on the other side.
His face was full of shock.
“Stay with us.”
Claire looked at him.
A weak smile appeared.
“You always were terrible at saying goodbye.”
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“Don’t.”
Claire looked at Elena.
Her fingers barely moved.
“Ethan…”
Elena grabbed her hand.
“What about Ethan?”
Claire struggled to speak.
“He needs…”
A painful breath.
“He needs the truth.”
Elena’s voice trembled.
“Tell me.”
Claire looked toward the child.
Ethan stood behind Lucas.
His small face was frozen with fear.
Then Claire whispered:
“He was never supposed to inherit the Vale fortune.”
Everyone froze.
Elena frowned.
“What are you saying?”
Claire closed her eyes.
“Daniel isn’t his biological father.”
The world stopped.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Ethan looked confused.
Daniel looked like he had been punched.
Adrian immediately turned toward him.
“Explain.”
Claire opened her eyes.
“I tried to stop it.”
Her voice was weak.
“But I was too late.”
Elena felt numb.
She looked at Ethan.
Then at Daniel.
“Is this true?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
That silence hurt more than any words.
Elena stood slowly.
“Daniel.”
His eyes met hers.
And she saw it.
The truth.
The truth she had been chasing.
“You knew.”
Daniel lowered his head.
“Yes.”
A wave of pain crossed Elena’s face.
“You knew all this time?”
“Yes.”
“Then everything you told me was a lie.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“No.”
She backed away.
“Don’t.”
Her voice broke.
“Don’t come near me.”
Ethan watched them.
Confused.
Scared.
Daniel looked at him.
“I was his father.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“But not by blood.”
Silence.
Then Daniel said:
“I raised him.”
His voice cracked.
“I loved him.”
He looked at Elena.
“I loved you.”
Tears filled his eyes.
“That part was never a lie.”
Elena wanted to hate him.
She wanted to scream.
But she remembered.
The man who stayed awake beside her when she was sick.
The man who held Ethan as a newborn.
The man who sang to him at night.
How could a lie contain so many real moments?
“Who is his father?” Elena asked.
Nobody answered.
Then Adrian spoke.
Quietly.
“I know.”
Everyone turned.
Elena stared at him.
“You?”
Adrian looked at Ethan.
“Yes.”
A terrible realization crossed her face.
“Tell me.”
Adrian hesitated.
Then said:
“The person who started all of this…”
He swallowed.
“Is the person who created Ethan.”
Lucas frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Adrian looked at him.
“It means Ethan was not an accident.”
A cold silence filled the room.
Elena felt sick.
“What are you saying?”
Adrian continued.
“Seven years ago, Daniel discovered that someone was secretly using the Vale family’s medical research division.”
Elena stared.
“Medical research?”
Adrian nodded.
“Genetic experiments.”
The guests gasped.
“They wanted to create someone with specific genetic traits.”
Lucas looked horrified.
“You’re saying…”
Adrian looked at Ethan.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“Ethan was created.”
Elena immediately pulled Ethan closer.
“No.”
Her voice became protective.
“No one talks about my son like he’s a thing.”
Adrian softened.
“Elena…”
“No.”
She looked around.
“He is a child.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“He laughs. He cries. He gets scared.”
She held Ethan’s hand.
“He is not an experiment.”
Nobody argued.
Because she was right.
Then Daniel spoke.
“The person behind it wanted Ethan because of what he represents.”
Elena looked at him.
“What?”
Daniel answered:
“A perfect heir.”
A chill went through the room.
“A child with the Vale bloodline.”
“With certain genetic advantages.”
“Someone they could control.”
Elena looked at Ethan.
The pieces started connecting.
The threats.
The kidnapping.
The lies.
Everything.
Someone wanted her son.
Not because he was a child.
But because he was valuable.
A sudden movement came from the back of the ballroom.
A man stepped out.
Everyone turned.
He was older.
Gray hair.
Calm.
Almost invisible.
Which was exactly why nobody noticed him.
Adrian’s face changed.
“No.”
The man smiled.
“Hello, Adrian.”
Elena looked at him.
“Who are you?”
The man looked at Ethan.
Then answered:
“Someone who has spent seven years waiting.”
Daniel’s expression became filled with rage.
“You.”
The man smiled.
“Yes, Daniel.”
Elena looked between them.
“Who is he?”
Adrian finally spoke.
His voice was barely a whisper.
“Richard Vale.”
Elena froze.
Another Vale.
Another secret.
Richard smiled.
“My dear Elena.”
She stared.
“I thought you were dead.”
Richard laughed softly.
“That was the idea.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“You destroyed this family.”
Richard looked amused.
“No.”
He looked at Ethan.
“I saved it.”
Elena’s anger rose.
“You kidnapped me.”
Richard looked at her.
“I protected the future.”
“By taking my child?”
“He was never only your child.”
Elena’s eyes became cold.
“He is my son.”
Richard smiled.
“That is exactly why you are dangerous.”
The room went tense.
Security surrounded Richard.
But he didn’t seem afraid.
Because he had one more card.
He pulled out a small device.
Then pressed a button.
The ballroom doors locked.
The lights turned red.
Everyone panicked.
Richard spoke calmly.
“Nobody leaves.”
Adrian stared.
“What did you do?”
Richard looked at him.
“You really thought I came here alone?”
Then every screen in the ballroom turned on.
A live feed appeared.
Showing a room.
A hospital room.
An empty chair.
And a person sitting there.
Elena’s blood froze.
Because she knew that face.
The person on the screen looked directly at the camera.
And smiled.
It was her mother.
A woman who had died ten years ago.
Elena whispered:
“No…”
The woman on the screen spoke.
“Elena.”
The voice was weak.
But real.
“I’m sorry.”
Elena couldn’t breathe.
Her mother continued:
“I tried to tell you.”
Richard looked satisfied.
“The truth has always been hidden because nobody was willing to accept it.”
The woman on the screen cried.
“Your father and I discovered what they were doing.”
Elena’s eyes filled.
“Mom…”
Richard interrupted.
“Your parents tried to expose me.”
He smiled.
“So I removed them.”
The room went silent.
Elena looked at Richard.
“You killed them?”
Richard shrugged.
“They became a problem.”
Daniel moved forward.
“You monster.”
Richard ignored him.
“Elena, you always wondered why you survived.”
She stared.
“What?”
Richard smiled.
“Because I needed you alive.”
A chill passed through her.
“I needed the mother.”
He looked at Ethan.
“For the son.”
Ethan began crying.
Elena immediately covered his ears.
“Don’t listen.”
Richard continued.
“Tonight ends everything.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“You won’t win.”
Richard laughed.
“You still don’t understand.”
He looked at Elena.
“Your biggest mistake was believing family was about love.”
A pause.
“Family is about power.”
Then the ballroom doors suddenly exploded open.
Police rushed inside.
Everyone turned.
Richard looked shocked for the first time.
Lucas lowered his phone.
“I sent everything.”
Richard stared.
“What?”
Lucas smiled.
“Every confession.”
The recordings.
The evidence.
Everything.
A dozen phones were already recording.
The guests had captured every word.
Richard’s expression changed.
For the first time…
He was afraid.
Security moved toward him.
But before they reached him—
Richard grabbed a nearby weapon.
And pointed it directly at Ethan.
Everyone froze.
Elena stepped in front of her son.
“Don’t.”
Richard stared.
“You still don’t understand.”
His hand shook.
“Everything I did was for the Vale legacy.”
Elena looked at him.
“No.”
Her voice became calm.
“You did everything for yourself.”
A pause.
“And you lost.”
Richard hesitated.
That moment was enough.
Daniel moved.
Adrian moved.
The security team rushed forward.
The weapon fell.
Richard was taken down.
The ballroom exploded into chaos.
But Elena didn’t move.
She held Ethan.
Safe.
Alive.
Then Daniel walked toward her.
Slowly.
“I’m sorry.”
Elena looked at him.
“I don’t know if I can forgive you.”
Daniel nodded.
“I understand.”
A tear fell from his eye.
“But I will spend the rest of my life proving I deserve it.”
Elena looked at Ethan.
The little boy looked up.
“Mommy?”
“Yes?”
“Are we a family now?”
Elena looked at Daniel.
Then Adrian.
Then Lucas.
Then Ethan.
She smiled sadly.
“We’re going to become one.”
But none of them noticed…
On the floor near Richard’s fallen device…
A final message appeared.
UNKNOWN USER:
PROJECT ETHAN WAS NEVER THE ONLY ONE.
Elena saw it.
And her smile disappeared.
Because the nightmare wasn’t over.
May you like
Not yet.
