CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET BEHIND ETHAN’S BIRTH

CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET BEHIND ETHAN’S BIRTH

The message on the screen stayed there for only three seconds.

Three seconds was all it took.

Three seconds for every person in the ballroom to understand that the elegant charity gala had become something else.

A warning.

A threat.

A confession waiting to happen.

Then the screen went black.

The silence afterward was heavier than any scream.

Elena stood in the middle of the ballroom with Ethan’s small hand wrapped around hers.

Her son.

The child she had mourned.

The child she had spent seven years believing was gone.

Was alive.

And now someone wanted him.

Again.

“Mommy?”

Ethan’s voice pulled her back.

She looked down.

His face was pale.

He was trying so hard to be brave.

Trying so hard not to cry.

Elena knelt beside him.

“Hey.”

She touched his cheek.

“Look at me.”

He did.

“Nothing is going to happen to you.”

A tear rolled down his face.

“You promise?”

Elena’s heart broke.

Because seven years ago, she had promised the same thing.

She had promised she would always protect him.

And then she disappeared.

“I promise,” she whispered.

But deep inside, fear was already growing.

Because she knew one thing.

Someone had taken her once.

Someone powerful.

Someone close.

And now they had found her.

A loud crash suddenly came from the entrance.

Everyone turned.

The ballroom doors opened.

A group of security officers rushed inside.

Adrian Vale immediately stepped forward.

“Lock down the building.”

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Everyone noticed.

Lucas Hart moved closer to Elena.

“Don’t let him take Ethan.”

Elena looked at him.

“You think he would?”

Lucas didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

That was the answer.

Adrian looked toward the security team.

“Nobody leaves.”

The guests began whispering.

Some protested.

Some demanded explanations.

But Adrian ignored them.

His attention remained on Elena.

“You need to come with me.”

Elena laughed quietly.

The sound carried anger.

“After everything tonight, you still think I would follow you?”

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain.”

Adrian stared at her.

For a moment, something almost human appeared in his eyes.

Regret.

Pain.

But it vanished quickly.

“Not here.”

“No.”

Elena held Ethan closer.

“Here.”

She pointed around the room.

“These people deserve to know.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“You always were stubborn.”

“And you always thought you could control everyone.”

A flash of anger crossed his face.

Lucas stepped between them.

“That’s enough.”

Adrian looked at him.

“You have no idea what you’ve done.”

Lucas smiled coldly.

“I spent seven years trying to expose you.”

“No.”

Adrian’s voice dropped.

“You spent seven years chasing a lie.”

Elena looked between them.

“Stop.”

Both men turned.

She looked at Adrian.

“I need answers.”

A pause.

Then:

“Who took me?”

Nobody spoke.

The question hung in the air.

Finally, Adrian answered.

“Someone who wanted to destroy the Vale family.”

Elena frowned.

“That doesn’t explain anything.”

“It explains everything.”

“No.”

Her voice shook.

“You erased my life.”

She stepped closer.

“You let me believe my son was dead.”

Adrian looked away.

And that small movement hurt more than any confession.

Because it meant there was guilt.

“You knew,” Elena whispered.

Adrian didn’t deny it.

“You knew Ethan was alive.”

The entire ballroom reacted.

Shock.

Disbelief.

Anger.

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“How long?”

Adrian remained silent.

“How long did you know?”

Finally, he said:

“Since the day he was born.”

Elena froze.

Lucas looked stunned.

Even Adrian’s own security team looked surprised.

“What did you say?” Elena whispered.

Adrian looked at Ethan.

“The night you disappeared…”

His voice became quieter.

“Was not the night Ethan died.”

Elena felt dizzy.

“Then what happened?”

Adrian looked at her.

“The person who attacked you wasn’t after you.”

A pause.

“They were after him.”

Elena looked at Ethan.

Her son.

“Why?”

Adrian didn’t answer.

That was when Lucas spoke.

“Because Ethan isn’t just your son.”

Elena turned.

“What does that mean?”

Lucas looked uncomfortable.

Then he reached into his jacket.

He pulled out another folder.

“Before you disappeared, you discovered something.”

He handed it to her.

Inside were medical records.

DNA reports.

Financial documents.

Elena stared.

“What is this?”

Lucas swallowed.

“The reason people wanted you gone.”

She opened the first page.

Her eyes moved across the words.

Then stopped.

Her face lost all color.

“No…”

Lucas watched her carefully.

“Elena.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Her fingers trembled.

“This isn’t possible.”

“What?” Adrian asked.

For the first time that night, he looked genuinely worried.

Elena slowly looked up.

“The DNA report.”

Her voice barely existed.

“It says…”

She looked at Ethan.

“It says Ethan has a genetic marker linked to the Vale bloodline.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

Because he knew what came next.

Lucas finished:

“He is the only surviving heir.”

The ballroom erupted.

People began talking.

The investors.

The reporters.

Everyone suddenly understood.

Ethan wasn’t just a child.

He was an inheritance.

A future.

A fortune.

A throne.

Elena looked at Adrian.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“You knew they would come for him.”

“Yes.”

“And you still hid him?”

Adrian’s silence was answer enough.

Elena stepped back.

“You separated me from my son to protect him?”

Adrian looked at her.

“I separated you because you were the reason they could find him.”

The words cut deep.

Elena’s eyes widened.

“What?”

Adrian continued.

“You were the target.”

Lucas shook his head.

“That’s not the full truth.”

Adrian looked at him sharply.

“Stop.”

“No.”

Lucas stepped forward.

“Tell her.”

Elena looked at Lucas.

“What truth?”

Lucas hesitated.

Then:

“Your accident wasn’t random.”

A cold feeling moved through her.

“Someone inside your family planned it.”

Adrian’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But Elena saw.

“You know who.”

A long silence.

Then Adrian said:

“Yes.”

Everyone waited.

“Who?”

Adrian looked at Elena.

And for the first time, she saw something she never expected.

Fear.

“The person who tried to kill you…”

He paused.

“Was your husband.”

The world stopped.

Elena couldn’t move.

“My…”

Her voice broke.

“Who?”

Adrian looked at Ethan.

Then back at her.

“Daniel.”

The name hit her like a physical blow.

Daniel Vale.

Her husband.

Ethan’s father.

The man she loved.

The man who had held her hand when Ethan was born.

The man who promised they would grow old together.

“No.”

Elena shook her head.

“No, he died.”

Adrian’s expression was grim.

“That’s what everyone was told.”

Lucas looked at her.

“He disappeared the same night you did.”

Elena stepped backward.

Her memories started coming back.

Fragments.

A dark road.

Rain.

A car door opening.

Daniel’s voice.

A whisper.

“Trust me.”

Then pain.

A terrible sound.

Glass breaking.

Her own scream.

She grabbed her head.

“Stop…”

Lucas moved toward her.

“Elena.”

“I remember…”

Everyone froze.

She looked terrified.

“I remember the car.”

Her breathing became faster.

“I remember Daniel.”

Adrian’s face tightened.

“What did he say?”

Elena closed her eyes.

Trying to reach into the broken pieces of her memory.

“He said…”

A tear fell.

“He said he was sorry.”

Silence.

Then Ethan spoke.

A small voice.

“But my daddy is not bad.”

Everyone looked at him.

The boy’s face was confused.

Scared.

“He used to tell me Mommy was coming back.”

Elena stared.

Her heart shattered.

“Ethan…”

“He showed me pictures of you.”

He wiped his tears.

“He said he was trying to find you.”

Adrian went completely still.

“What?”

The boy looked at him.

“Uncle Adrian said Daddy disappeared.”

A pause.

“But Daddy came to see me.”

The room became silent.

Elena looked at Adrian.

“You said Daniel was gone.”

Adrian looked shocked.

“I never saw him.”

Ethan shook his head.

“Yes you did.”

Everyone turned.

The boy pointed.

“He was here.”

A chill went through the ballroom.

“When?”

Ethan looked toward the entrance.

“Before we came tonight.”

Elena felt her blood run cold.

“Ethan…”

“Daddy told me…”

The boy’s voice became small.

“He said if I saw Mommy…”

He looked at Elena.

“Don’t let her leave.”

Nobody breathed.

“Because he was coming to take us home.”

At that exact moment—

The ballroom lights went out.

A scream came from the crowd.

Then the emergency lights turned on.

And in the center of the room…

A phone was lying on the floor.

Nobody had seen it before.

The screen lit up.

A message appeared.

ELENA.

WELCOME BACK.

She stared.

Her hands went cold.

Another message appeared.

I MISSED YOU.

Then the final one:

COME FIND ME.

BEFORE I FIND ETHAN.

Elena looked toward the doors.

Because she knew.

Somewhere outside…

The man who destroyed her life was waiting.

Her husband.

The father of her child.

May you like

The man who was supposed to be dead.
