Chapter 3 - The Other Recordings

Mariela was arrested at six the following morning.
Police officers entered her apartment while she was packing two suitcases.
She claimed she was planning a weekend trip.
Investigators found airline tickets to Madrid purchased less than an hour after Daniel left his parents’ house.
Teresa had paid for them.
Mariela was charged initially with aggravated assault against a minor. The prosecutor warned that additional charges could follow depending on Sofia’s medical condition and the evidence found during the investigation.
Teresa arrived at the police station with an attorney before sunrise.
She told officers that the video lacked context.
She insisted Sofia had pulled Mariela’s arm.
She accused Camila of manipulating the family.
Then police played the audio of Teresa ordering Arturo to erase the recording.
Her attorney immediately asked for a private room.
By midday, Teresa and Arturo were also under investigation for evidence tampering, obstruction, and failure to assist an injured child.
Daniel returned to the hospital carrying coffee he did not drink.
Camila was sitting beside Sofia, singing softly to her.
When Daniel entered, she stopped.
“Did you find it?”
He placed his phone on the table and played the footage.
Camila lasted only thirty seconds.
She turned away when Mariela raised the cup.
“I don’t need to see the rest.”
Daniel stopped the video.
“The police have the original.”
“Did your parents know?”
“Yes.”
Camila studied his face.
“How much did they know?”
“Everything.”
Daniel told her about the attempt to erase the footage. He repeated Teresa’s instructions to Mariela and Arturo’s attempt to block him from leaving.
Camila listened without interruption.
When he finished, she looked toward Sofia.
“They were going to say she caused it.”
“Yes.”
“She is two years old.”
“I know.”
“No, Daniel.”
Camila’s voice remained quiet.
“That is what you always say. You know. You understand. You see it now.”
She turned toward him.
“But I need you to stop saying you know as though knowing is the same as doing something.”
Daniel accepted the words.
“You’re right.”
“I warned you about Mariela.”
“Yes.”
“I told you she shoved Sofia at Christmas.”
“You did.”
“Your mother said Sofia tripped, and you told me not to make the holiday worse.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“I remember.”
“I told you Iker hit her with a wooden train.”
“You told me.”
“Your father said boys played roughly.”
“I know.”
Camila’s eyes filled with tears.
“I kept asking you to protect her before something worse happened.”
Daniel sat beside her.
“And I failed.”
Camila did not comfort him.
For once, he did not expect her to.
A detective arrived that afternoon.
Her name was Lucía Navarro.
She carried another storage device in a sealed evidence bag.
“We found more recordings,” she said.
Daniel frowned.
“From the patio?”
“From inside Mariela’s apartment.”
Camila looked at her.
“Why were you searching her apartment?”
“Because of what officers found while executing the arrest warrant.”
Detective Navarro opened a tablet.
“Mrs. Mariela Torres had several cameras installed throughout her home. She claimed they were for security, but one camera recorded a conversation between her and Teresa three weeks ago.”
The video showed Mariela sitting at her dining table with Teresa.
Iker played in another room.
Teresa spoke first.
“Daniel has changed since he married Camila.”
Mariela poured wine.
“He was always weak around women.”
“Camila is not the problem by herself. Sofia makes the marriage permanent.”
Camila’s hand tightened around Daniel’s.
On-screen, Mariela laughed.
“She is only a child.”
“Children become leverage.”
“What do you expect me to do?”
“Help him see that Camila is careless.”
Teresa placed photographs on the table.
The images showed Sofia with bruises on her knees, food on her clothes, and tears on her face.
Normal moments from a toddler’s life.
Each photograph had a date and note beneath it.
Unsuitable supervision.
Poor hygiene.
Emotional instability.
Frequent injuries.
Daniel went pale.
Detective Navarro paused the recording.
“We found a complete file.”
“What kind of file?” Camila asked.
“A custody file.”
Teresa and Mariela had spent months collecting photographs and statements designed to make Camila appear negligent.
There were letters allegedly written by neighbors.
A draft report from a private psychologist.
A list of supposed incidents in which Sofia had been left unattended.
None were true.
The plan was to create a family intervention.
Teresa wanted Daniel to believe Camila was an unfit mother.
If he refused, they intended to file an anonymous child-welfare complaint.
Mariela would testify that Camila had allowed Sofia to attack Iker repeatedly.
The coffee incident was supposed to become another example.
Not of Mariela’s violence.
Of Sofia’s “behavioral problems.”
“They were building a case against me,” Camila whispered.
Detective Navarro nodded.
“But why?” Daniel asked.
The detective resumed the recording.
Mariela lifted one of the photographs.
“Once Camila is gone, what happens to Sofia?”
Teresa answered without hesitation.
“She goes with her mother.”
“And Daniel?”
“He returns home.”
“To live with you?”
“To recover.”
Mariela smiled.
“And then?”
Teresa sipped her wine.
“Valeria is still single.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
Valeria Salgado was the daughter of one of his father’s business partners.
She had dated Daniel briefly before he met Camila.
Teresa had never hidden her disappointment when Daniel ended the relationship.
The recording continued.
“Valeria would never accept another woman’s child,” Mariela said.
“She would not have to.”
“What about Iker?”
Teresa smiled.
“Daniel has always treated him like a son.”
The meaning became clear.
Teresa did not merely want Camila removed.
She wanted Sofia removed with her.
She wanted Daniel paired with Valeria.
And she wanted Iker positioned as the child Daniel should support, educate, and eventually include in the family business.
The attack with the coffee had not been part of the original plan.
But when it happened, Teresa immediately tried to reshape it into an opportunity.
Camila pressed one hand over her mouth.
Daniel stood and walked toward the window.
For years, he had believed his mother preferred Iker because he was the first grandchild.
Now he understood.

She had not merely favored one child.
She had been trying to replace another.
