Chapter 2 - The Footage They Tried to Erase

Daniel left the hospital shortly after midnight.

Camila remained beside Sofia’s bed, listening to the soft hiss of oxygen from the wall unit and the steady beeping of the monitor clipped to her daughter’s finger. Sofia stirred every few minutes, whimpering whenever her bandaged cheek touched the pillow.

Each sound hardened something inside Camila.

For years, she had tolerated the small humiliations.

Her mother-in-law, Teresa, had complained that Sofia was too loud, too clingy, too sensitive. She compared her constantly to Mariela’s four-year-old son, Iker, who could do no wrong.

If Iker pushed Sofia, he was energetic.

If Sofia cried, she was dramatic.

If Iker took her toys, children needed to learn to share.

If Sofia touched one of his, Teresa called her spoiled.

Daniel had always noticed.

He simply had not understood how dangerous the pattern had become.

At 12:43 a.m., Daniel parked two streets away from his parents’ house.

The lights were still on.

Through the front windows, he could see shadows moving between the kitchen and living room. His family was not sleeping.

They were planning.

Daniel entered through the side gate using the old access code. He moved quietly along the wall until he reached the small office beside the garage where his father kept the security system.

The office door was locked.

Daniel used the spare key hidden beneath the electrical panel.

Inside, the monitor displayed six camera feeds.

Front gate.

Driveway.

Kitchen entrance.

Rear garden.

Terrace.

Covered patio.

The assault had happened on the patio.

Daniel selected the afternoon recording.

The screen showed Camila arriving with Sofia at 3:08 p.m. Teresa greeted Iker warmly, though he had already been at the house for several hours. She barely looked at Sofia.

At 3:22, Mariela placed a red toy truck on the floor beside her son.

Sofia approached it.

The footage had sound.

“Truck,” Sofia said happily.

She touched one wheel.

Iker immediately shouted.

“That’s mine!”

Before Camila could intervene, Mariela crossed the patio.

“You always let her take things,” she snapped.

Camila reached for Sofia.

“She only touched it.”

Mariela picked up her coffee.

Daniel leaned closer to the screen.

There was no sudden movement.

No startled reaction.

No accidental slip.

Mariela looked directly at Sofia, lifted the cup, and threw the coffee toward her face.

The child screamed.

Daniel’s breath stopped.

On the recording, Camila dropped to her knees and pulled Sofia against her chest.

Mariela stepped backward.

She did not look shocked.

She looked satisfied.

Then Teresa entered the frame.

For one terrible second, Daniel expected his mother to help.

Instead, Teresa pointed toward the gate.

“Get that child out of my house!”

Camila screamed for cold water.

No one moved.

Daniel’s father, Arturo, appeared from the dining room.

“What happened?”

“She attacked Iker,” Mariela said.

The camera showed Sofia curled against Camila, her cheek already red and blistering.

Arturo did not look at her.

“Take her outside,” he ordered.

Daniel watched his mother take the red truck from the ground, wipe coffee from it with a napkin, and return it to Iker.

The footage continued after Camila carried Sofia toward the gate.

Mariela stood beside the table, breathing hard.

Teresa approached her.

“You lost control,” Teresa said.

“I know.”

“If Camila calls the police, you say the child pulled the cup.”

“She didn’t.”

“I know what happened.”

Teresa lowered her voice.

“But the camera does not need to.”

Daniel went still.

His mother looked directly toward the security camera mounted beneath the patio roof.

Then she called Arturo.

“We need to delete the recording.”

Arturo glanced toward the house.

“I’ll do it after dinner.”

“No. Now.”

They entered the office several minutes later.

Daniel fast-forwarded.

The interior office camera showed Arturo sitting at the computer while Teresa stood behind him.

Arturo attempted to erase the patio footage.

He failed.

The system required an administrator password Daniel had created years earlier.

Teresa became agitated.

“Call him.”

“And say what?”

“Tell Daniel the system is malfunctioning.”

“He is at the hospital.”

Teresa stared at him.

“Then call someone who knows computers.”

The office door opened behind Daniel.

He turned.

His father stood in the doorway.

For several seconds, neither man spoke.

Arturo looked at the monitor.

“You should not be here.”

Daniel removed the storage drive from the computer.

“You tried to erase evidence of an assault on my daughter.”

Arturo closed the door.

“It was an accident.”

“I watched it.”

“Video can be misunderstood.”

“I heard Mother instruct Mariela to lie.”

Arturo’s face tightened.

“Your wife has always looked for reasons to divide this family.”

Daniel stepped toward him.

“My daughter has burns on her face.”

“And Mariela made a mistake.”

“She threw boiling coffee at a two-year-old.”

“She was protecting her son.”

“From a child touching a toy?”

Arturo lowered his voice.

“You need to think carefully. If you involve the police, you will destroy your sister’s life.”

Daniel stared at him.

“My sister tried to scar my daughter.”

“She is your blood.”

“So is Sofia.”

Arturo looked away.

The gesture told Daniel everything.

In his father’s mind, Sofia had never truly belonged.

Daniel placed the drive in his jacket.

Arturo blocked the door.

“You are not taking that.”

Daniel took out his phone.

“I have already uploaded a copy.”

It was a bluff.

But Arturo believed him.

He stepped aside.

As Daniel reached the hallway, Teresa emerged from the kitchen.

She was still wearing the cream dress she had worn during the afternoon.

“You went through our private recordings?” she demanded.

“You mean the recording of your daughter assaulting my child?”

Teresa’s eyes hardened.

“You are emotional.”

“No. I am finally paying attention.”

“Sofia provoked Iker.”

“She touched a truck.”

“She has never respected boundaries.”

“She is two.”

“And Camila encourages her.”

Daniel felt the last thread connecting him to his mother begin to tear.

“You watched Sofia scream.”

Teresa folded her arms.

“I watched Camila create a spectacle.”

Daniel stared at her.

“No, Mother.”

“You watched a burned child, and your only concern was protecting the person who hurt her.”

Teresa’s expression softened artificially.

“Daniel, we can solve this quietly.”

“There is nothing quiet about what Sofia suffered.”

“You will regret turning against your family.”

Daniel opened the front door.

“My family is in the hospital.”

Then he left.

Before returning to Camila, Daniel drove directly to the police station.

He placed the security drive on the desk and said five words that ended generations of silence.

“I want to report my sister.”
