Chapter 4 - The Rat in the Corner

When a cornered predator realizes it cannot win by the rules, it abandons them entirely.

With the threat of federal fraud charges hanging over Vance Financial Group, Arthur Vance’s real estate empire began to collapse. Investors were pulling out, banks were freezing credit lines, and the family’s wealth was evaporating overnight.

Mark was facing up to ten years in prison for domestic assault, coercion, and corporate embezzlement. He was desperate. And a desperate Mark was a highly dangerous man.

One rainy Tuesday evening, Emily was staying at her father’s house in Columbus. Robert had gone to a late-night dinner with the District Attorney to finalize the criminal indictment against Mark.

Emily was alone in the study, reading a book, trying to find some peace. The house was secure, equipped with state-of-the-art alarm systems that Robert had personally tested.

Suddenly, the power went out.

The house plunged into pitch darkness. The comforting hum of the refrigerator and the air conditioning died. Emily froze, her heart hammering against her ribs.

It’s just a storm, she told herself. Just a blown transformer.

But then, the backup generator failed to kick in. Robert’s generator was designed to start within five seconds of a power outage.

Emily reached for her phone on the desk. The battery was at twenty percent. She opened her flashlight app and illuminated the room.

Creak.

A sound came from the floorboards upstairs. It was faint, but distinct.

Emily’s breath hitched. She unlocked her phone and dialed her father’s number. It rang once, twice, three times—

"Emily? Is everything okay?" Robert’s voice was warm, but she could hear the background noise of a restaurant.

"Dad," she whispered, her voice trembling. "The power went out. The generator didn't turn on. And... I think I heard something upstairs."

The background noise on Robert’s end immediately vanished. "Emily, listen to me very carefully. Go to my bedroom. In the nightstand, there is a lockbox. The code is 1-9-9-4. Inside is a licensed firearm. Take it, lock the door, and do not come out. I am calling the police right now and I am driving home. I'm five minutes away."

"Okay, Dad, okay," Emily gasped.

She crept out of the study, using the dim light of her phone to guide her. The house felt massive and terrifying in the dark. Every shadow looked like a threat. She reached the stairs and began to climb, her bare feet making no sound on the carpet.

Suddenly, a hand reached out from the darkness of the hallway and grabbed her ankle.

Emily shrieked, tripping and slamming her chin against the wooden stair. Her phone flew out of her hand, tumbling down the stairs, its flashlight beam spinning wildly before landing face down, plunging the hallway into near-total darkness.

"Did you really think it would be that easy, Emily?"

The voice was raspy, smelling of alcohol and desperation. It was Mark.

He dragged her down the stairs by her leg. Emily kicked wildly, her heel connecting with his chest. He grunted, releasing his grip for a split second.

Emily scrambled backward, clawing her way up the stairs. "Mark, stop! The police are on their way! My dad knows you're here!"

"I don't care anymore!" Mark screamed, stumbling up the stairs after her. In the dim light filtering through the window, Emily saw the glint of a heavy metal crowbar in his hand. "You ruined my life! My father is bankrupt, my mother is on tranquilizers, and I am going to jail! If I am going down, I am taking you with me!"

Emily reached the top landing and bolted toward her father’s bedroom. She threw the door shut and scrambled to lock it, but Mark threw his weight against the wood.

The door splintered. Mark forced his way inside, his eyes wild and bloodshot. He looked completely unhinged, stripped of all the wealth and polish that had once masked his monstrous nature.

He raised the crowbar.

"You should have just kept your mouth shut," Mark snarled, stepping toward her.

Emily backed up against the nightstand. Her hand frantically searched behind her, feeling the cold metal of the gun lockbox. But she didn't have time to enter the code.

With a cry of survival, Emily grabbed a heavy crystal vase from the nightstand and threw it with all her strength.

It struck Mark squarely in the forehead.

He staggered back, swearing loudly, blood pouring from a gash near his hairline. He wiped the blood from his eyes, his expression turning from anger to pure, murderous rage.

"Now you're dead," he whispered.

He lunged forward—

BANG.

The sound of the front door being kicked off its hinges echoed through the house, followed by the heavy, rapid thud of footsteps climbing the stairs.

"Police! Hands in the air!"

Officer Miller, accompanied by three other officers with tactical flashlights, burst into the bedroom.

Mark froze, the crowbar raised mid-air. The bright tactical lights blinded him.

"Drop the weapon! Drop it now!"

Mark looked at the officers, then at Emily, who was sobbing on the floor, clutching her knees. He realized there was no escape. The crowbar clattered to the floor.

Within seconds, Mark was tackled to the ground, his face pressed hard against the carpet as the officers secured the cuffs.

Robert Hayes rushed into the room, pushing past the officers. He fell to his knees beside Emily, pulling her into his arms.

"I've got you, baby. I've got you," Robert whispered, his own tears wetting her hair. "You're safe. It's over. I swear to God, it's over."
