Chapter 3 - The War in the Courts

The days that followed were a blur of legal maneuvers, media scrutiny, and high-stakes drama. True to his word, Robert Hayes did not play gentle. He enlisted the best divorce and criminal defense attorneys in the state, forming a legal team that treated the case like a federal prosecution.
However, the Vance family was not going down without a fight.
Mark’s father, Arthur Vance, was a powerful real estate mogul with deep pockets and connections in local government. Within forty-eight hours, Mark was released on an incredibly high bail, paid instantly by his father.
Immediately, the smear campaign began.
Emily woke up one morning to find her inbox flooded with alerts. An anonymous source had leaked "information" to local tabloids. The headlines were savage:
“Prominent Financial Advisor Mark Vance Falsely Accused of Abuse by Gold-Digging Wife?”
“Emily Vance’s History of Psychological Instability Revealed in Bitter Divorce Battle.”
The articles fabricated stories of Emily having manic episodes, claiming she bruised herself during self-harm incidents to frame her husband for financial gain. They even posted edited security photos of Emily looking distressed, painting her as unstable.
Emily sat at her father’s kitchen table in Columbus—where she had fled for safety—clutching a mug of tea, her eyes filled with tears. "They're destroying me, Dad. My clients are canceling their appointments. People are looking at me like I'm a monster."
Robert calmly sipped his coffee, looking over the legal documents spread across the table. "This is a classic play, Emily. When the guilty have no defense, they attack the victim's credibility. They want to pressure you into a quick, quiet settlement. They want you to drop the criminal charges in exchange for a payout."
"I don't want their money," Emily whispered. "I just want my life back."
"And you will get it," Robert said, a cold, calculating smile playing on his lips. "They think they're the only ones with connections. They forgot who they are dealing with."
Robert picked up his phone and dialed a number. "Marcus? It's Robert. I need you to initiate the forensic audit on Vance Financial Group. Yes, the husband's firm. I want every tax return, every offshore account, and every real estate transaction Arthur Vance has made in the last ten years. Let's see how much dirt we can dig up under their pristine foundation."
Two days later, the first court hearing for the permanent restraining order and temporary alimony was held.
The courtroom was packed with reporters, tipped off by the Vance family's PR team. Mark sat at the defense table, wearing a tailored navy suit, looking relaxed and confident. His mother, Diane, sat in the front row of the gallery, smirk on her face, mouthing the words "you're finished" to Emily as she walked in.
But Emily walked in with her head held high, flanked by her father and her lead attorney, Sarah Jenkins.
"Your Honor," Mark’s attorney, a high-priced lawyer named Richard Vance (no relation, but a long-time family friend), began. "This entire circus is a calculated attempt to ruin my client's reputation. Mrs. Vance has a history of emotional instability. The video evidence presented by the prosecution is highly suspect and may have been edited to take a minor domestic dispute out of context."
Sarah Jenkins stood up, holding a manila folder. "Your Honor, if I may. We are not here to debate edited footage. We have the raw, unedited, cloud-synced files from the home's security system, verified by an independent digital forensics expert."
She walked over to the defense table and laid down a stack of papers.
"Furthermore," Sarah continued, her voice echoing in the courtroom, "we have subpoenaed the medical records of Emily Vance from three different hospitals across the state over the last two years. Each time, she was treated for facial contusions, fractured ribs, and sprained wrists. And finally, we have a deposition from Mark Vance’s former assistant."
Mark’s attorney stood up. "Objection, Your Honor! Relevance?"
"It is highly relevant, Your Honor," Sarah countered. "The deposition details that Mr. Vance used company funds to purchase hush-money non-disclosure agreements with two former employees who witnessed him assaulting his wife in his office."
A collective gasp went through the gallery. Mark’s confident expression shattered. He turned violently to his attorney, whispering furiously.
"I have the signed NDAs right here," Sarah said, holding up the documents. "Which are illegal under state law as they were used to conceal ongoing criminal activity."
The judge looked over the documents, his face grim. He looked down at Mark with deep distaste.
"The permanent restraining order is granted," the judge ruled, slamming his gavel. "Mr. Vance is ordered to vacate the marital residence immediately. He is to have no contact, direct or indirect, with the plaintiff. Furthermore, this court is referring these financial documents and NDAs to the State Prosecutor's office for immediate investigation into obstruction of justice and corporate fraud."
Outside the courtroom, reporters swarmed. Mark tried to push his way through, but the microphones were shoved in his face.
"Mr. Vance, did you use corporate funds to cover up domestic abuse?"
"Are you facing federal fraud charges?"
May you like
Emily watched from the glass doors of the courthouse as Mark and Diane were hounded by the media they had invited. For the first time in two years, Emily felt a genuine smile spread across her face.
But the war was far from over.
