Chapter 4: The Final Betrayal

Chapter 4: The Final Betrayal

Lily stood alone in the hallway.

The message on her phone remained open.

The picture of her mother.

The threat.

The unknown number.

Everything felt unreal.

A few minutes ago, she had finally found her father.

She had finally learned that he didn’t leave because he stopped loving her.

She had finally discovered that her family’s pain was caused by someone else.

And now…

Someone had her mother.

Her fingers trembled as she tried calling the number.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

A third time.

Still nothing.

“Lily.”

She turned quickly.

Noah was standing behind her.

Emily was beside him.

Both looked worried.

“What happened?”

Lily didn’t answer immediately.

She just handed Noah her phone.

His expression changed as he read the message.

“This isn’t a joke.”

“I know.”

“We need to tell someone.”

Lily shook her head.

“No.”

Noah looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because every time we tell someone, the person behind this finds out.”

She looked at Emily.

“And they’re always one step ahead.”

Emily slowly nodded.

She hated admitting it.

But Lily was right.

The person controlling everything wasn’t just powerful.

They were careful.

They had watched them for years.

They knew their fears.

Their weaknesses.

Their secrets.

“So what do we do?” Noah asked.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Emily said quietly:

“We find my father.”

Lily looked at her.

“Victor Carter?”

Emily nodded.

“If he’s behind this, he knows where your mother is.”

Lily hesitated.

The idea of trusting Emily’s family felt impossible.

But the truth was…

Emily was the only person who understood how dangerous Victor could be.

“Okay,” Lily said.

“We find him.”

They left school before the final bell.

For the first time in years, Lily wasn’t worried about being noticed.

She wasn’t worried about rumors.

She wasn’t worried about what people thought.

Because suddenly, popularity and reputation seemed meaningless.

There was only one thing that mattered.

Her mother.

Emily drove them.

The entire ride was silent.

Finally, Noah broke the tension.

“You know this is insane, right?”

Emily glanced at him.

“What part?”

“Everything.”

He looked between them.

“Yesterday, Lily and Emily were enemies.”

Emily sighed.

“And now we’re chasing my father together.”

Noah nodded.

“Exactly.”

Nobody laughed.

Because it was true.

Life had changed too quickly.

They arrived at the Carter family’s private office building.

The place was huge.

Modern.

Cold.

The kind of building that made people feel small.

Emily looked at it through the windshield.

“I grew up here.”

Lily looked at her.

“What?”

Emily smiled sadly.

“Everyone thought I was lucky.”

She looked at the building.

“But this place never felt like home.”

They walked inside.

The receptionist immediately recognized Emily.

“Miss Carter?”

Emily ignored the surprise.

“Where is my father?”

The receptionist looked nervous.

“He’s not available.”

“Where is he?”

The woman looked away.

That was enough.

Emily leaned closer.

“You know something.”

The receptionist swallowed.

“I can’t say.”

“Why?”

The woman whispered:

“Because your father scares everyone.”

The words hit Emily harder than expected.

Because she realized something.

The entire world thought she had been powerful.

But inside her own house…

She had been afraid.

They searched the building.

Office after office.

Until they reached the top floor.

Victor Carter’s private room.

The door was locked.

Noah examined it.

“Security system.”

Emily stepped forward.

“He never changed it.”

She entered a code.

The door opened.

Inside, everything was perfectly organized.

Almost too organized.

Like someone who controlled every detail.

Lily looked around.

“Where would he hide something?”

Emily walked toward a bookshelf.

“My father always hid important things behind things that looked ordinary.”

She touched a book.

Pulled it.

Nothing.

Another.

Nothing.

Then Lily noticed something.

A photograph.

A family picture.

Emily and her father.

Years ago.

She looked closer.

“Emily.”

Emily turned.

“What?”

“This picture.”

She pointed.

“Look.”

Behind the photo frame was a small gap.

Emily removed it.

A hidden compartment appeared.

Inside was a folder.

Nobody spoke.

Because they already knew.

This was what Victor had hidden.

Emily opened it.

The first page shocked them.

A list of names.

Payments.

Dates.

And at the bottom…

Daniel Morgan.

Lily felt sick.

Her father’s name was there.

But not as a victim.

As a target.

Someone had planned everything.

Years ago.

“This proves it,” Noah whispered.

Emily kept searching.

Then she found something else.

A letter.

She opened it.

Her face changed.

“What?”

Lily asked.

Emily couldn’t speak.

She handed the letter over.

Lily read it.

And froze.

It wasn’t from Victor.

It was from her mother.

Her mother.

The woman they were trying to save.

The letter was dated three months after Daniel disappeared.

The words were simple.

But they changed everything.

“Victor, I know what you did.”

Lily’s hands shook.

“I know you framed Daniel.”

Everyone became silent.

The letter continued.

“But if you touch my family, I will reveal everything.”

Lily looked up.

Her voice barely came out.

“My mother knew.”

Emily nodded slowly.

“She knew the whole time.”

The room felt colder.

Because the biggest question suddenly wasn’t:

Who hurt their family?

It was:

Why did Lily’s mother hide the truth?

Before anyone could answer…

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Someone was coming.

Noah turned off the lights.

Everyone hid.

The office door opened.

A man walked inside.

Victor Carter.

Emily held her breath.

Her father stepped into the room.

But he wasn’t alone.

A second person followed him.

And when Lily saw who it was…

She almost cried out.

Because the person standing beside Victor Carter…

Was the last person she expected.

Her own mother.

Alive.

Standing.

And apparently working with the enemy.

“Mom?”

The word escaped.

The room went completely still.

Her mother turned.

Their eyes met.

And the sadness on her face said everything.

She wasn’t surprised.

She had known Lily would find out.

“Lily…”

Her voice broke.

“I can explain.”

Lily stepped out of the shadows.

Her heart shattered.

“Explain what?”

Her mother looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

Those two words hurt more than any lie.

Because they sounded like a goodbye.

Victor Carter looked at Lily.

A small smile appeared.

“After all these years…”

He shook his head.

“You really are your father’s daughter.”

Lily stared at him.

“Where is he?”

Victor smiled.

“He’s exactly where I wanted him.”

Noah stepped forward.

“You’re finished, Carter.”

Victor laughed.

“Am I?”

He looked at Emily.

Then at Lily.

“You still don’t understand.”

He pulled out his phone.

Pressed a button.

The office doors locked.

Every exit sealed.

Then he said:

“The truth you found…”

He smiled.

“Was only the beginning.”

The lights suddenly went off.

And in the darkness…

Someone screamed.

Not from fear.

From pain.

When the lights returned…

Victor was gone.

And on the floor was a final message.

Written on a piece of paper.

Four words.

“Trust nobody. Not even family.”

Lily looked at her mother.

And for the first time in her life…

May you like

She didn’t know if she was looking at someone who loved her…

Or someone who betrayed her.
