Chapter 3: The Enemy Behind the Rumor

Chapter 3: The Enemy Behind the Rumor
Nobody moved.
The cafeteria that was usually filled with laughter, conversations, and the sound of hundreds of students talking at once had become completely silent.
Every person was looking at the same scene.
Lily Morgan.
Standing only a few feet away from the man she had spent years believing had abandoned her.
Her father.
Daniel Morgan.
A man she had only seen through old memories and faded photographs.
A man she had tried to hate.
A man she had secretly hoped would come back.
But now that he was standing there…
She didn’t know what she felt.
Anger.
Confusion.
Pain.
Everything hit her at once.
“Because someone wanted me gone.”
His words repeated in her mind.
Someone.
Not himself.
Not because he didn’t care.
Someone else.
Lily stared at him.
“You expect me to believe that?”
Her voice cracked.
Daniel looked at her with sadness.
“I know how it sounds.”
“No.”
Lily shook her head.
“You don’t get to say that.”
The room stayed silent.
Because everyone could feel this was no longer school drama.
This was something much bigger.
“You disappeared,” Lily continued.
“You missed birthdays. Holidays. Everything.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You weren’t there when Mom was struggling.”
Daniel lowered his head.
“I know.”
“Do you know what people said?”
Her voice became louder.
“They said you left because you didn’t love us.”
Daniel looked like every word hurt.
“But they were wrong.”
Lily laughed bitterly.
“Were they?”
Before he could answer, Emily stepped forward.
“Lily…”
Everyone turned.
Emily looked nervous.
But she didn’t step back.
“There’s something you need to know.”
Lily looked at her.
“Apparently everyone knows something except me.”
The words were sharp.
Emily accepted them.
Because she deserved it.
“I found out recently,” Emily said.
“My father kept documents.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“You shouldn’t have seen those.”
Emily looked at him.
“I know.”
The entire cafeteria was confused.
Nobody understood.
Except three people.
Lily.
Emily.
And Daniel.
“What documents?” Lily asked.
Daniel took a breath.
“Proof.”
“Proof of what?”
He looked around.
At all the students watching.
Then at Lily.
“Proof that I was framed.”
A wave of whispers moved through the room.
Daniel continued.
“Years ago, I worked with Emily’s father.”
Emily looked uncomfortable.
“My company was responsible for handling financial records.”
Lily frowned.
“What does that have to do with us?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Your mother and I discovered something.”
“What?”
“That someone was stealing money.”
The cafeteria became even quieter.
“Someone inside the company was moving millions of dollars.”
Lily stared.
“And you found out?”
Daniel nodded.
“I found evidence.”
“And then?”
His eyes darkened.
“And then someone made sure I couldn’t expose it.”
Lily’s stomach tightened.
“Who?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Not immediately.
That scared her.
Because if he was afraid…
It meant the person was dangerous.
Finally, he said:
“Victor Carter.”
The name shocked Emily.
She stepped back.
“My father?”
Daniel nodded.
“No.”
Emily shook her head.
“No, that’s impossible.”
“My father is not—”
She stopped.
Because suddenly memories came back.
Things she had ignored.
Late-night phone calls.
Arguments.
Locked office doors.
Her father telling her:
“Stay out of adult problems.”
Emily looked sick.
“No.”
Daniel looked at her.
“I’m sorry.”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“All this time…”
Her voice trembled.
“You knew?”
Daniel looked away.
“I suspected.”
“And you let me believe my father was perfect?”
The question was painful.
Because Daniel had no answer.
Lily watched Emily.
For the first time, she saw something unexpected.
They were not enemies.
They were two people who had been lied to.
Two daughters trapped inside secrets created by adults.
But before anyone could say more, the cafeteria doors opened.
A group of teachers walked in.
The principal looked nervous.
“We need everyone to remain calm.”
Nobody was calm.
Not anymore.
The principal looked at Daniel.
“You cannot be here.”
Lily immediately stepped forward.
“Why?”
The principal avoided her eyes.
“Because this situation is complicated.”
“No.”
Lily’s voice was stronger.
“Tell me the truth.”
The principal looked uncomfortable.
Then someone laughed.
A quiet laugh.
A familiar one.
Everyone turned.
A student was standing near the entrance.
Ryan Blake.
The person who always seemed to know everything.
The student who ran the anonymous gossip page.
The student who never got involved.
Until now.
“You all want the truth?”
Ryan asked.
Nobody answered.
He smiled.
“Fine.”
He lifted his phone.
And everyone’s phones suddenly received a notification.
Another post.
Another rumor.
But this time…
It wasn’t about Lily.
It was about Victor Carter.
A recording appeared.
A voice.
A man’s voice.
Emily’s face went pale.
Because she recognized it.
Her father.
The recording played.
“I don’t care what happens to Morgan. Make sure he disappears.”
The cafeteria froze.
Then another sentence came.
“He can’t tell anyone what we did.”
Lily covered her mouth.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Because after years of silence…
The proof was finally out.
Ryan looked at everyone.
“The reason I posted the rumor about Lily…”
He swallowed.
“Was because I was trying to find out who was protecting Victor Carter.”
Lily stared at him.
“You?”
Ryan nodded.
“I knew someone was controlling information at this school.”
Emily looked angry.
“You hurt Lily to investigate?”
Ryan looked guilty.
“I didn’t think it would get that far.”
Lily laughed softly.
A tired laugh.
“Everyone keeps saying they didn’t mean to hurt me.”
She looked around.
“But I’m always the one getting hurt.”
Nobody spoke.
Because she was right.
The people who cared about her.
The people who wanted to protect her.
The people who wanted to expose the truth.
All of them had made choices that left her carrying the pain.
Daniel stepped toward her.
“Lily…”
She stepped back.
Not because she hated him.
Because she was overwhelmed.
“I need time.”
Her father stopped.
The words hurt.
But he understood.
For years, Lily had needed answers.
Now she had too many.
She turned and walked away.
Outside the cafeteria, the hallway felt empty.
Quiet.
Almost peaceful.
Until her phone buzzed.
One new message.
Unknown number.
She opened it.
A picture appeared.
Her mother.
Sitting in a dark room.
And beneath it, one sentence:
“Stop searching for the truth.”
Another message appeared.
“Or your father won’t be the only person who disappears.”
Lily’s hands started shaking.
Because suddenly she understood.
The secret wasn’t just about the past.
The person behind everything was still watching.
And this time…
May you like
They weren’t trying to ruin her reputation.
They were trying to destroy her life.
