Chapter 5 - The Reckoning in the Boardroom

The emergency board meeting of Vale Technologies was held via video conference at 2:00 PM.

On the massive screen in Daniel's study, the faces of twelve prominent board members and Sir Alistair Sterling stared back at him, their expressions grim and impatient.

"Daniel," Alistair began, his voice echoing through the speakers. "We've reviewed the public relations reports. Elise Vale’s defense team is already filing a motion to have your mother evaluated by a court-appointed psychiatrist. This is going to be a long, drawn-out media circus. The board cannot risk—"

"I’m going to stop you right there, Alistair," Daniel interrupted. He sat behind his desk, his expression entirely calm, his hand resting on the laptop connected to the main server. "Before we discuss the acquisition, I want to share a short video presentation with you. It has already been delivered to the Chicago District Attorney and the lead editors of the major news outlets."

Daniel pressed a key.

The screen split, displaying a high-definition video recording from the blue sitting room, dated two days prior.

On the screen, Margaret Vale sat quietly in her armchair, holding a framed photograph of her late husband. Elise walked into the room, her face twisted in a sneer. She snatched the photograph from Margaret’s hands, throwing it onto the sofa.

"You're a pathetic old woman, Margaret," Elise’s recorded voice rang out, clear and venomous. "Your son doesn't love you. He leaves you here with me because he can't stand the sight of your decay. If you tell him about the trust transfers, I'll make sure they lock you in a state asylum where no one will ever visit you."

The board members gasped. One of the female directors covered her mouth in horror.

The video jumped to the foyer, dated yesterday afternoon. It showed Margaret standing near the console table, holding her envelope. Elise stormed in, grabbing Margaret’s wrist and twisting it until Margaret cried out, dropping the blue ceramic planter. The planter shattered on the marble floor.

The video clearly showed Elise picking up the heavy wooden carpet brush, pressing it directly against Margaret’s trembling hands as she forced her to her knees in the soil.

"Clean it up, you crazy old fool," Elise hissed on screen. "Or I’ll make sure Daniel never comes home to see you again."

The video went black.

The silence in the virtual boardroom was deafening. Even Sir Alistair looked completely stunned, his aristocratic composure entirely shattered.

"This is..." Alistair stammered, his voice shaking. "This is monstrous."

"This is the reality of what my mother endured while I was building our European market," Daniel said, his voice carrying the cold, heavy weight of an absolute truth. "My wife is currently in custody, held without bail due to the severity of the financial fraud and the physical evidence of elder abuse. Her PR firm has already dropped her, and her family is currently withdrawing all legal support to avoid being named as co-conspirators."

Daniel leaned forward, looking directly into the camera.

"I am proceeding with the divorce, and I am proceeding with the full prosecution of Elise Vale. But I will not allow this board, or this acquisition, to question my mother’s integrity or her place in my life. If you want to pull out of the merger, do it now. But know this: Vale Technologies does not compromise on its values. And neither do I."

Sir Alistair looked at the other board members, who were nodding in silent, respectful agreement.

"Daniel," Alistair said, his voice soft and filled with a deep respect. "We apologize for doubting you. The board stands with you and your mother. The acquisition is approved. Take all the time you need to take care of your family."

"Thank you, Alistair," Daniel said, closing the laptop.

He leaned back in his chair, letting out a long, deep breath. The battle outside was won. Now, it was time to heal the battle within.
