Chapter 3 - The Locked Drawer

The grandfather clock in the study ticked with a slow, heavy rhythm that seemed to count down the minutes of Elise’s remaining time in the Vale mansion.

Daniel stood in the center of the dark-paneled room, his travel coat finally discarded, revealing the tense, strained lines of his shoulders. On the desk lay the ripped-out security camera and a heavy, iron key ring he had taken from the kitchen hook.

"Nora," Daniel said, looking at the young maid who stood quietly near the doorway. "Where is the key to Elise's desk?"

"She keeps it in her jewelry box upstairs, sir," Nora replied. "But the bottom drawer of the filing cabinet in her office isn't locked with a standard key. It's a digital keypad. I saw her enter the code once. It’s her mother’s birthday."

"0412," Daniel murmured. He knew his mother-in-law’s birthday well; he had paid for her expensive retirement home fees for the last two years.

He walked out of the study and down the long hallway toward Elise’s private office, a cold, modern room that sat in stark contrast to the rest of the historic mansion. As he reached the door, he found Elise standing by the window, her hands gripping a designer leather suitcase. She had changed into a dark trench coat, but her eyes were still burning with a manic, defiant energy.

"Looking for something?" she asked, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "You won't find anything, Daniel. My lawyers are already drafting a petition for emergency spousal support and a restraining order. If you touch my files, I'll add invasion of privacy to the list."

Daniel didn't answer. He walked past her, his heavy footsteps muffled by the thick Persian rug, and stopped in front of the sleek, black metal filing cabinet in the corner. He knelt down, his fingers hovering over the glowing blue numbers of the keypad.

He pressed: 0 - 4 - 1 - 2.

With a soft, electronic beep, the lock clicked open.

"You have no right!" Elise shrieked, lunging forward to grab his arm, but Daniel stood up, using his height and bulk to block her. He pulled the heavy metal drawer open, revealing neat rows of hanging folders.

But it wasn't just files. At the very back of the drawer sat a thick, cream-colored envelope with the official wax seal of Caldwell & Vance Associates—the legal firm that managed the Vale Family Trust.

Daniel pulled the envelope out. It had already been sliced open. Inside was a stack of legal documents and a certified bank ledger.

He flipped through the pages, his eyes scanning the columns of numbers. As he read, the cold knot in his stomach turned into a hard, fiery rage.

"You didn't just hide this envelope, Elise," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You signed it."

"It was a standard administrative update," Elise said, her voice wavering for the first time. She took a step back toward the door. "As your wife and attorney-in-fact, I had the right to restructure the domestic accounts."

"This isn't a restructuring," Daniel said, slamming the ledger onto the desk. "You forged my mother's signature on a power of attorney amendment. You transferred three million dollars from the Vale Family Trust into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands under your maiden name. You were systematically draining my mother's medical and care funds while telling me she was getting the best private therapy."

"She doesn't need three million dollars to sit in a chair and watch the garden!" Elise defended, her voice rising to a frantic shriek. "She’s dying, Daniel! Whether it takes two years or ten, she is going to leave this world, and what do I get for spending my youth playing nursemaid to a ghost? A measly pre-nuptial allowance? I deserved that money! I earned it!"

"You stole from a defenseless elderly woman," Daniel said, his eyes filled with a disgust so profound it made Elise flinch. "You abused her, terrified her, and isolated her in her own home just so you could steal her care fund without anyone noticing."

"No one would have noticed if you hadn't come home early," Elise whispered, her face pale, her eyes darting toward the open door.

"But I did come home," Daniel said. He pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed a number he had memorized years ago.

"Who are you calling?" Elise panicked, reaching for her suitcase.

"Detective Vance," Daniel said into the phone as the call connected. "This is Daniel Vale. I need you to come to the estate immediately. I have undisputed evidence of grand larceny, elder abuse, and identity fraud. And yes... the suspect is still on the premises."

May you like

Elise let out a sharp, choked sob. She dropped her suitcase and bolted toward the hallway, but as she reached the grand foyer, she found her path blocked.

Two estate security guards, alerted by Marcus on Daniel's orders, stood inside the double doors. Behind them, the flashing red and blue lights of a police cruiser began to paint the white marble walls of the foyer in rhythmic, condemning colors.
