Chapter 5 - The Legal Reckoning

Three weeks later, the physical recovery of Hailey Robertson was nearly complete.
In the private, high-security medical wing of the Robertson estate in Lake Forest, Hailey sat in a rocking chair, cradling Toby. The baby had gained weight, his cheeks rosy and healthy. The peace and quiet of the estate, surrounded by ancient oaks and monitored by round-the-clock security, had done wonders for her healing.
Her father, Finnley, walked into the room, holding a tablet. His face was calm, but his eyes carried the satisfaction of a victorious general.
"How are my two favorite people?" Finnley asked, leaning down to press a kiss to Hailey’s forehead and gently stroking Toby’s soft hair.
"We’re doing wonderful, Dad," Hailey smiled, looking down at her son. "I haven't had a single pain in my stitches for days. The doctors say I'm fully cleared."
"Excellent. Because the legal circus is about to reach its final act," Finnley said, sitting opposite her. He tapped the screen of the tablet. "Jasper’s legal team tried to file for temporary custody of Toby last week. They claimed you were mentally unstable and unfit, hoping to use the baby as leverage to secure a multi-million-dollar divorce settlement."
Hailey’s smile vanished, replaced by a cold, sharp expression. "I assume Arthur handled it?"
"Arthur didn't just handle it; he demolished them," Finnley chuckled. "We presented the court with the hospital discharge records, the security footage of Jasper leaving you at the hospital, the bus driver's eyewitness testimony, and the financial audits showing Jasper embezzled nearly eight hundred thousand dollars of company funds to pay for his mother’s credit cards and his sister’s luxury travel."
"What did the judge say?"
"The judge was so disgusted she immediately denied all visitation rights for Jasper, issued a permanent restraining order, and ordered his arrest for corporate embezzlement," Finnley explained. "Furthermore, the divorce has been finalized. You are officially Hailey Robertson again. Toby’s birth certificate has been amended. He carries our name now."
Just then, the intercom on Finnley’s desk buzzed. It was the security gate officer.
"Mr. Robertson, we have Gillian and Priscilla Vance at the main gate. They are begging to speak with Ms. Hailey. They look... highly disheveled, sir."
Hailey looked at her father. "Let me see them on the camera."
Finnley pressed a button, displaying the security feed of the front gates. Gillian and Priscilla were standing in the light rain, their expensive clothes ruined and soaked. Gillian was crying, shouting toward the intercom, while Priscilla looked desperate and exhausted. They had spent the last three weeks living in a cheap motel, their assets seized and their reputations destroyed.
"Hailey, please!" Gillian’s voice cracked through the speaker. "We are so sorry! We didn't know! If we had known who you were, we would have never treated you that way! Please, tell your father to stop the lawsuits! Jasper is facing prison! We have nothing!"
Hailey stood up from her rocking chair, holding Toby close to her chest. She walked over to the intercom monitor and pressed the button.
"You're right, Gillian," Hailey said, her voice cool and steady, devoid of any anger. "You didn't know who I was. But that is your tragedy, not mine. A person's value shouldn't depend on their father's bank account. You treated me like garbage when you thought I was poor. Now, you can experience what it's like to have nothing."
"Hailey, please! We're family!" Priscilla begged.

"We were never family," Hailey replied. "Goodbye, Gillian. Goodbye, Priscilla."
She cut the feed. The gates remained locked, and the security team gently but firmly escorted the weeping women off the property. The reckoning was complete.
