Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The next morning, the grand library of the Carver mansion felt like a military tribunal.
Claire Whitlock sat on the leather sofa, her face pale but her eyes still burning with arrogant defiance. Her father, Richard Whitlock—the patriarch of the Whitlock shipping empire—stood beside her, his hands trembling with a mixture of rage and fear.
"Daniel, this is an outrage!" Richard demanded, slamming his fist on the mahogany desk. "You kept my daughter locked in this house overnight! You cancelled our engagement celebration over a maid? She is a servant! Claire made a minor, albeit tasteless, joke, and you treat us like criminals!"
Daniel sat behind his desk, slowly turning a heavy silver pen in his fingers. He didn't look angry; he looked entirely bored, which made him infinitely more terrifying.
"She is not a maid, Richard," Daniel said quietly. "Her name is Hannah Brooks. She is the widow of Aaron Brooks, the man your company murdered on Dock 4."
The room went dead silent. Richard’s face flushed a deep, guilty crimson.
"That... that was an industrial accident!" Richard stammered. "We settled with the family—"
"You fabricated a seventy-thousand-dollar loan document, threatened a pregnant widow, and forced her into labor to cover up your financial crimes," Daniel countered, his voice rising just a fraction, cutting through the air like a blade. "And let us not forget Caleb Monroe. The bookkeeper who discovered that the Whitlock family was using Carver shipping routes to smuggle illegal firearms and narcotics, using my name as a shield."
Claire stood up, her voice shrill. "This is absurd! You're making up stories to defend that pathetic woman! Daniel, look at me! I am your fiancée! We are supposed to rule this city together!"
"Our engagement was a business transaction, Claire. And the transaction is void," Daniel said, standing up and towering over them. "But more importantly, you laid your hands on her. You cut her hair. You humiliated her in my home."
Before Claire could speak, the heavy double doors of the library opened. Sergeant Miller, a dirty cop on the Whitlock payroll who had helped cover up Aaron’s death, was dragged into the room by two of Daniel’s enforcers. He was battered, bruised, and weeping.
"He talked, Richard," Daniel said, walking around the desk. "He gave us the location of the offshore accounts. He gave us the names of the men who pushed Aaron off that platform. And he told us exactly where you are keeping Caleb Monroe."
Hannah stood just outside the library doors, holding young Ben’s hand. Her heart hammered in her chest as she heard the revelation.
Caleb is alive.

Inside, Richard Whitlock collapsed into a chair, his eyes hollow. "Daniel... please. We can make a deal. We can transfer all our shipping assets to you. Just let Claire go. She had nothing to do with the shipping business."
"No deals," Daniel said, looking down at them with cold finality. "Martin, call the federal authorities. Tell them we have the Whitlock family, their ledgers, and their dirty cops ready for transport. And prepare the cars. We are going to get Hannah’s brother."
