Chapter 6 - The Lion of Venice

Venice in late autumn was a city of mist, shadows, and ancient stone.

The Council of Elders convened in the Palazzo Vendramin, a magnificent 15th-century palace sitting directly on the Grand Canal. Its Gothic arches and marble balconies loomed over the dark water like silent guardians of a forgotten era.

A fleet of sleek black water taxis glided through the fog, bringing the heads of the five major trade families of the world to the secret summit.

Nia sat in the rear cabin of Jyn’s private launch. She wore an elegant, floor-length emerald green velvet dress, her hair styled in a sophisticated updo. Beside her, Jyn looked every bit the dark prince of an empire in a tailored black tuxedo, a silver family signet ring gleaming on his right hand.

Leo sat on Nia’s lap, wearing a miniature suit and bowtie, looking utterly adorable and completely unimpressed by the historic grandeur around him. He was happily playing with Thor, who sat on the floor of the boat, wearing a custom leather security harness emblazoned with the silver dragon emblem.

"Are you ready?" Jyn asked gently, taking Nia’s hand.

"I’m terrified," Nia admitted honestly. "But I'm ready."

The launch docked at the palace’s private water gate. Heavily armed guards in formal livery bowed as Jyn, Nia, Leo, and Thor stepped onto the marble landing.

They were escorted up the grand staircase into the Sala del Maggior Consiglio—a vast hall illuminated by massive crystal chandeliers and lined with Renaissance oil paintings.

At the far end of the hall sat a long curved oak table. Five elderly men and women dressed in formal attire sat in high-backed chairs—the Council of Elders.

Sitting at a separate table on the left side of the room was the Chong family delegation, led by Patriarch Victor Chong—a bitter, gaunt old man with cold, sunken eyes—and his ruthless son, Raymond Chong.

When Jyn’s party walked into the room, Victor Chong’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure venom. His gaze darted from Jyn to Nia, and finally to Leo.

Thor walked slightly ahead of the family, his heavy paws making a rhythmic click-click-click on the polished marble floor. He stopped in the center of the hall, standing broad and tall, his golden eyes fixed directly on Victor Chong.

The head of the Council—Lord Harrington, a distinguished gentleman from London with silver hair—struck a heavy wooden gavel against the table.

"The Council of Elders is now in session," Harrington announced, his deep voice carrying through the hall. "We are convened under Article 7 of the Grand Charter of 1922 to hear the declaration of the Jyn bloodline."

Jyn stepped forward, holding Nia’s hand, while Thor stood guard at their side.

"Elders of the Council," Jyn began, his voice commanding and steady. "I present to you my legitimate male heir, Leo Santos Jyn. Born sixteen months ago in Connecticut. Certified by DNA ledger signed by three independent medical authorities."

Lin stepped forward, placing a thick leather-bound folio containing the certified medical records onto the Elders' table.

Victor Chong slammed his fist onto his table, standing up. "This is a farce!" he spat, his voice trembling with rage. "This child was raised in secret! He is a bastard born to an outsider! He has no right to protection under the Charter!"

Lord Harrington raised a hand, silencing Chong with a cold glare. "Silence, Victor. The Charter makes no distinction regarding the mother's background. Blood is blood."

Harrington opened the folio, reviewing the documents with the four other Elders. They murmured among themselves in quiet tones for several long, agonizing minutes.

Nia held her breath, her hand tightening around Jyn’s fingers.

Finally, Lord Harrington looked up. He struck the gavel once.

"The Council finds the documentation valid and absolute," Harrington declared. "Leo Santos Jyn is recognized as the legitimate heir to the Jyn Syndicate."

A quiet gasp ran through the Chong delegation.

"Therefore," Harrington continued, his voice turning cold as iron, "under Article 7 of the Charter, an absolute Peace Mandate is hereby declared between the Jyn and Chong families. Effective immediately."

Raymond Chong, Victor’s arrogant son, stepped forward, his hand slipping toward the interior of his coat. "We do not accept this! We spent twenty years building our claim! We will not bow to a baby and his—"

Before Raymond could finish his sentence, Thor moved.

The massive dog didn't attack—he unleashed a single, thunderous roar that echoed off the high ceilings of the palace like a clap of thunder. The sound was so powerful, so primitive, that Raymond froze mid-step, his face turning pale as paper.

At the same instant, Jyn’s elite security detail and the neutral Council guards raised their weapons, thirty laser sight dots painting Raymond’s chest in crimson light.

"Step back, young man," Lord Harrington warned severely. "If you draw a weapon in this hall, the combined forces of all five families will erase your name from the registries before nightfall."

Victor Chong grabbed his son’s arm, dragging him back into his chair. The old man knew when he was defeated. His eyes were dead, his empire’s ambition crushed by a piece of parchment, a baby's laugh, and a faithful dog.

"The mandate is sealed," Harrington declared, striking the gavel one final time. "Meeting adjourned."

Epilogue: The Garden of Peace

Two years later.

The summer sun shone warmly over the manicured gardens of the Bernese Oberland estate. The snow had melted from the lower slopes, leaving the valley vibrant green and filled with wildflowers.

Nia sat on a stone bench on the terrace, wearing a light summer dress, painting a canvas set up on an easel. She was sketching the mountain peaks reflecting in the crystal-clear lake below.

From the lawn came the sound of joyous laughter.

Three-year-old Leo, dressed in shorts and a t-shirt, was running through the grass, chasing a brightly colored beach ball. Right behind him was Thor—a little older, a little grey around the muzzle, but as majestic and alert as ever.

The giant dog trotted beside the toddler, gently nudging the ball back toward Leo whenever it rolled too close to the garden wall.

Jyn walked out onto the terrace from his study, wearing a casual linen shirt. He held two glasses of chilled white wine. He walked up behind Nia, wrapping an arm around her waist and resting his chin softly on her shoulder as he looked at her painting.

"You've captured the light perfectly," Jyn whispered, kissing her cheek.

"It's easy when the subject is beautiful," Nia smiled, leaning back into his warm chest.

She looked down at her right hand. A stunning emerald-cut diamond ring sparkled on her finger—the companion to the velvet box she had held in her Connecticut kitchen two years ago. They had been married six months ago in the palace in Venice, surrounded by peace, respect, and their loyal people.

"The Chong family completed their asset transfer to Hong Kong today," Jyn mentioned casually, sipping his wine. "They are completely out of European shipping. Our trade lines are clean. The business is ninety-five percent legal now. By the time Leo turns eighteen, it will be a pure corporate trust."

"Good," Nia said softly, resting her head against his. "He deserves a peaceful life, Jyn."

"He has one," Jyn said, looking out at the lawn. "Because of his mother."

Down on the grass, Leo suddenly tripped over a root and tumbled into the soft clover.

Before Nia could even stand up, Thor was already there. The giant dog lay down beside the toddler, offering his thick, fur-covered back as a soft pillow. Leo giggled, throwing his small arms around Thor’s massive neck and burying his face in the dog’s fur.

Thor let out a long, contented sigh, his tail thumping against the grass—thud, thud, thud.

From his collar hung a small, solid gold charm shaped like a little yellow duck—a medal of honor given to him by the family, honoring the day a mafia boss’s dog stole a baby’s toy and saved an empire.

Jyn laughed softly, pulling Nia closer as the sun began to set over the Alps, bathing their home in a golden, permanent peace.
