Chapter 2 - The Sky Fortress

The private jet was unlike anything Nia had ever seen. It wasn't just luxury; it was a mobile command center wrapped in leather and polished mahogany.
Leo was fast asleep in a custom, state-of-the-art crib secured in the rear bedroom suite of the aircraft. Nia sat in a deep leather armchair in the main cabin, a warm cup of chamomile tea trembling in her hands.
Thor lay stretched out in the aisle between the seats, his heavy head resting on a chew toy—a bright yellow squeaky duck that he had somehow grabbed from Leo's nursery before they fled the house.
Nia stared at the dog, then at the duck. "He took Leo's toy."
Jyn, who was sitting across from her reviewing encrypted documents on a secure tablet, looked up. A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched the corners of his lips.
"Thor is... attached to Leo," Jyn said softly. "When my team installed the hidden camera network in your house three weeks ago—"
"Wait," Nia interrupted, setting her teacup down with a sharp clack. "You installed hidden cameras in my house three weeks ago?!"
"For protection," Jyn said smoothly, unbothered by her sudden spike in anger. "The moment my intelligence network flagged that the Chong family had traced my old connection to you, I had to monitor the premises. I couldn't risk approaching you until I had a full extraction plan in place."
"You breached my privacy!"
"I kept your son alive," Jyn countered calmly. "And if you check the footage from two days ago, you'll see why Thor stole that duck."
Nia blinked, her anger pausing mid-air. "What do you mean?"
Jyn tapped a few commands into his tablet and slid it across the table toward her. On the screen, a timestamped security video from her living room began to play.
It was Tuesday afternoon. Nia had been in the kitchen making lunch, and Leo was crawling in his playpen. The camera angle showed the living room window clearly. Outside, a strange man in a utility worker's uniform was fiddling with the window lock from the exterior frame.
On the video, Thor walked into the frame. He didn't bark. He quietly picked up Leo’s yellow squeaky duck from the floor, walked over to the playpen, dropped the duck right in front of Leo to distract him, and then stood directly between the playpen and the window.
When the man outside finally managed to pop the window latch open an inch, Thor stepped up to the glass. He didn't throw a fit; he simply pressed his massive snout against the pane, curled his lips back, and let out a vibration so intense that even the camera microphone picked up the rattling glass.
The man outside froze, looked into Thor's terrifying, murderous eyes, dropped his tools, and ran for his life.
After the intruder fled, Thor turned around, picked the yellow duck back up, and gently placed it back into Leo’s lap.
Nia stared at the screen, her heart in her throat. She had been thirty feet away in the kitchen, completely unaware that a break-in had been thwarted in her own living room.
"He... he protected him," Nia whispered, tears welling up in her eyes. "He didn't just guard the room. He distracted Leo so he wouldn't be scared."
"Thor was trained by the top K9 tactical specialists in Munich," Jyn explained, reaching out to pat the dog’s broad head. "He knows the difference between a threat and a child. He realized that duck was Leo’s comfort item. So, he claimed it as his 'duty item'—his way of keeping a piece of Leo's scent with him at all times."
Thor let out a soft squeak from the duck in his mouth, as if confirming the diagnosis.
Nia looked from the dog to Jyn. The anger she had felt a moment ago melted into a complex, overwhelming mixture of gratitude and shock.
"Why didn't you come yourself three weeks ago?" she asked gently.
Jyn looked out the dark window of the jet, where the cloud cover stretched endlessly beneath the moon. "Because coming back into your life meant dragging you into mine. I spent three years convincing myself that leaving you alone in Connecticut was the kindest thing I could ever do. You were clean, Nia. You were innocent. You were a high school art teacher living a peaceful life."
"And then you found out about Leo," she said.
"And then I realized that my silence didn't protect you—it just left you defenseless," Jyn said, his voice laced with a deep, haunting guilt. "The Chongs found out about him through a leaked medical record from the hospital where he was born. They knew before I did. I had to move heaven and earth to get to you before they did."
The severe blonde woman from the van—whose name was Elena, Jyn's head of security—stepped into the cabin.
"Boss," Elena said, bowing her head slightly. "We've cleared Swiss airspace. The Oberland compound is fully locked down. General Vane reports that the Chong syndicate has launched an emergency summit in Macau. They know we slipped through their fingers in Connecticut."
"Let them talk," Jyn said, his eyes turning cold and sharp again. "When we land, initiate Protocol Alpha. I want every asset the Chongs hold in European ports frozen by noon tomorrow."
May you like
"Understood, sir." Elena turned and walked back to the cockpit.
Jyn looked back at Nia. "Get some rest, Nia. When the sun rises, we will be in the mountains. And the war for our family's survival truly begins."
