Chapter 5 - The Final Confrontation

Realizing the game was up, Marcus panicked. He didn't grab the ledger. Instead, he turned and fled down the corridor, leaving Clara and Leo behind.
"We have to go after him," Leo said, pushing himself up from the floor, rubbing his bruised jaw. "He's going to warn Richard!"
"No, let him run," Clara said, her eyes flashing with a cold, sharp intelligence. "He’s leading us straight to my father. And this time, there will be no escape."
Using the hospital’s service elevator, Clara and Leo made their way to the rooftop helipad. The storm was raging, rain lashing against their faces as they pushed open the heavy exit doors.
There, standing next to a private luxury helicopter with its rotors already spinning, was Richard Sterling. Marcus was sprint-running toward him, shouting over the roar of the blades.
"We have to go! The feds are on their way! The girl leaked the feed!" Marcus screamed.
Richard looked at Marcus, his face twisting with disgust. "You useless fool," he spat. Without hesitation, Richard pulled a small, silver pistol from his pocket and fired. Marcus collapsed onto the wet concrete of the helipad, clutching his shoulder.
Richard turned to board the helicopter, but stopped.
Clara stood at the edge of the helipad. She was not in her wheelchair. She was standing tall, her hair soaked by the rain, her eyes blazing. Leo stood beside her, recording everything on his phone, broadcasting it live to the world.
"It's over, Dad," Clara shouted over the roar of the wind and the helicopter. "The police, the FBI, the media—they all know. You can't run from this."
Richard stared at his daughter. The sight of her standing, defying him, seemed to break something deep inside his mind. He walked toward her, the gun pointed at her chest.
"I made you, Clara!" he screamed, his voice cracking with madness. "You were nothing but a broken girl! I gave you a purpose! I made the world love you! You owed me your life!"
"You didn't make me," Clara said, taking a step forward, completely unafraid of the weapon. "You caged me. You stole my mother’s memory, you stole my legs, and you stole three years of my life. But you couldn't steal my soul."
"I will destroy you before I let you ruin me!" Richard yelled, raising the gun to pull the trigger.
Suddenly, a brilliant searchlight cut through the rain, blinding Richard. The thundering sound of police helicopters filled the sky.
"Drop your weapon, Richard Sterling!" a voice boomed from a megaphone. "You are completely surrounded!"
Richard spun around in panic. SWAT officers stormed the rooftop from the stairwells, their laser sights painting red dots across Richard’s chest.
Realizing he had lost, Richard looked at Clara one last time—a look of pure, venomous hatred. He took a step backward toward the edge of the helipad, intending to jump or force the police to shoot.
But Clara reached out. In a split second of pure instinct, she grabbed his arm.
"No," Clara said, staring into his eyes. "You don't get the easy way out. You're going to stay, and you're going to watch me walk."

With a swift motion, Leo grabbed the gun from Richard's hand, and the police tackled the disgraced billionaire to the wet ground.
As Richard was pressed against the concrete, screaming curses, Clara stood tall above him, the rain washing away the last remnants of her fear.
