Chapter 2 - The Safe House and the Hidden Ledger

The rain poured heavily against the cracked windows of a small, secluded cabin in the woods, three hours outside the city. Inside, the only light came from a single flickering lamp and the glow of a laptop screen.
Clara sat on a wooden sofa, her legs wrapped in a warm blanket. Leo was pacing back and forth, his eyes glued to the news on his phone. The internet was exploding. The hashtag #ClaraStands was trending worldwide. The Sterling Foundation’s stock had plummeted to zero overnight, and federal agents were currently raiding Richard’s mansion.
"They're calling it the trial of the century," Leo said, rubbing his tired eyes. "But your father’s lawyers are already working. They’re going to claim the medical report was doctored by my father to blackmail Richard. They have billions, Clara. If we don’t find the physical evidence of what happened to my dad, Richard might walk free on bail, and this will all get swept under the rug."
"Where is your father’s safe?" Clara asked, her voice quiet. She was still processing the fact that her entire life had been a lie.
Leo walked over to a bookshelf, pulled a worn copy of The Count of Monte Cristo, and pressed a hidden button. A floorboard clicked open. From beneath it, he pulled out a heavy, dust-covered metal lockbox.
"My dad told me if he ever went missing, I should find this," Leo said, sitting opposite her. He used a key hanging around his neck to unlock it. Inside were several flash drives, a thick black leather ledger, and a video camera.
Clara watched as Leo plugged one of the flash drives into his laptop. A video file popped up. He clicked play.
The face of Dr. Julian Vance appeared on the screen. He looked exhausted, with dark circles under his eyes, sitting in what appeared to be his office at the hospital.
"If you are watching this, it means Richard Sterling has made good on his threats," Dr. Vance said, his voice trembling but resolute. "I have discovered a massive web of corruption. Richard isn't just using his daughter to raise money for charity. He is using the Sterling Foundation to launder money for an international pharmaceutical syndicate. They are testing unapproved, highly addictive neurological blockers on unsuspecting patients. And Clara... Clara is their prime test subject."
Clara gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Unapproved drugs? The blue pills..."
"I tried to stop him," Dr. Vance continued on the video. "But Richard threatened my son, Leo. He told me he would destroy my family. I have hidden the ledger containing the transaction records, the bank account numbers, and the names of the board members involved. It is in the Sterling Memorial vault, under security clearance level 5. Leo, if I don't make it back, take this to Detective Marcus. Do not trust anyone else."
The video cut to static. Leo slumped back, tears streaming down his cheeks. "He knew. He knew what Richard would do to him, and he still tried to save you."
Clara reached out, placing her hand over Leo’s shaking hand. "We are going to finish what he started, Leo. We’re going to expose all of them."
Suddenly, the headlights of an approaching car swept across the cabin walls.
Leo jumped up, peer-hunting through the window. Two dark black SUVs had pulled up into the driveway. Men in tactical gear, carrying silenced pistols, were stepping out.
"They found us," Leo whispered in panic. "Your father’s private security. They must have tracked my phone."
"Leo, my legs," Clara panicked, trying to stand, but her muscles screamed in protest. She fell back onto the sofa.

"I’ve got you," Leo said. He grabbed the laptop, the ledger, and the flash drives, stuffing them into his backpack. He then scooped Clara up in his arms. "There’s a cellar door leading to the woods. We have to run."
The front door of the cabin was kicked open with a loud splintering crash just as Leo slipped through the cellar door into the cold, pouring rain. Behind them, gunfire erupted, shattering the cabin windows. They were running for their lives, and the hunt had officially begun.
