Chapter 5 - The War in Room 402

The courtroom on the fourth floor of the Cook County Domestic Relations Building was packed with news cameras and legal observers.

Daniel Ashford sat at the defense table wearing a dark grey suit, looking composed and remorseful, flanked by Arthur Sterling and three assistant attorneys. On the other side sat Claire, dressed in a simple navy blue suit, with Sarah Miller beside her.

Judge Evelyn Vance—a formidable woman in her sixties with a reputation for zero tolerance—struck her heavy wooden gavel against the bench.

THUD!

"This court is in session regarding the matter of Ashford v. Bennett," Judge Vance stated sternly. "Mr. Sterling, you have filed an emergency petition for custody. State your grounds."

Arthur Sterling stood up, adjusting his golden reading glasses.

"Your Honor," Sterling began smoothly, walking toward the center aisle. "My client, Daniel Ashford, acknowledges that he made a regretful error during a tense confrontation at Ashford Hall two weeks ago. However, he is a loving father who wishes to fulfill his paternal duties to his biological daughter, Sophie."

Sterling turned, looking at Claire with a patronizing, pitying smile.

"The mother, Claire Bennett, grew up in unstable foster care environments," Sterling continued. "She has demonstrated extreme hostility toward the Ashford family, using a minor child as a weapon to orchestrate a public corporate takeover. We argue that Ms. Bennett's volatile emotional history and lack of traditional family structure make her unfit to raise a child who inherits a major national legacy."

Judge Vance looked over her glasses at Sarah Miller. "Ms. Miller, your response?"

Sarah stood up, calmly opening a sleek silver briefcase.

"Your Honor, we do not need rhetoric," Sarah said. "We have evidence. We call our first witness: Officer James Callahan."

A retired, grey-haired Chicago police officer walked up to the witness stand and took the oath.

"Officer Callahan," Sarah asked, "in June of 2019, were you employed as a private security driver for the Ashford family?"

"I was," Callahan testified clearly. "And on June 14th of that year, Daniel Ashford handed me a cashier's check for forty thousand dollars and gave me a direct order."

"What was that order?" Sarah asked.

Callahan looked directly at Daniel, whose face began to twitch nervously. "He told me to drive Claire Bennett to the Indiana state line, drop her off at a bus station, and tell her that if she ever returned to Chicago, he would use his political influence to have her arrested for stalking."

The gallery gasped loudly!

"Did you keep a record of that instruction, Officer Callahan?" Sarah inquired.

"I did," Callahan replied, pulling a worn black notebook from his jacket pocket. "I recorded every journey in my official security log. And I saved the dashcam audio from that night."

Sterling jumped up frantically! "Objection, Your Honor! Unsubstantiated hearsay!"

"Overruled, Mr. Sterling!" Judge Vance snapped, her eyes burning with outrage as she reviewed the certified logbook handed to her by the bailiff.

Sarah turned back to the judge. "Your Honor, Claire Bennett built a national medical logistics company from nothing while raising her daughter with love, dignity, and absolute devotion. Daniel Ashford did not seek custody out of love. He sought custody because under the terms of Nathaniel Ashford’s master trust, the legal guardian of Sophie Bennett controls eighty million dollars in liquid assets."

Judge Vance looked down from her elevated bench at Daniel Ashford, her expression holding absolute, icy contempt.

"Mr. Sterling," Judge Vance spoke, her voice echoing through the courtroom like thunder. "Your petition for custody is not only denied—it is dismissed with prejudice."

She slammed her gavel down! THUD!

"Furthermore," Judge Vance continued, "this court terminates all parental rights of Daniel Ashford permanently. A full protective order is issued prohibiting Daniel or Vivienne Ashford from coming within one thousand feet of Sophie Bennett for the rest of their natural lives. And I am referring Mr. Ashford to the State Attorney's Office for criminal witness intimidation!"

Daniel slumped in his leather chair, burying his face in his hands as his legal team silently packed their bags and walked away.
