Chapter 4 - The Shadows Fight Back

Two weeks after the night of the gala, the fallout from the Ashford scandal had completely reshaped Chicago’s political and financial landscape.

Daniel Ashford dropped out of the gubernatorial race in disgrace, his campaign accounts frozen by federal prosecutors. Vivienne Ashford was held without bail at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, facing up to twenty-five years in federal prison for grand larceny and wire fraud.

However, a wounded animal is most dangerous when cornered.

From her cell in the federal detention center, Vivienne used her remaining private offshore funds to retain Arthur Sterling—a ruthless defense attorney known in corporate legal circles as 'The Sledgehammer.'

On a rainy Thursday afternoon, Claire sat in the executive office of Bennett Health Logistics overlooking Lake Michigan when her desk phone rang.

"Claire," her corporate legal counsel, Sarah Miller, said as she stepped into the office, holding a stack of legal papers. "We have a problem. Sterling just filed a emergency motion in Cook County Family Court."

Claire frowned, setting down her pen. "What kind of motion?"

"A petition for emergency custody of Sophie," Sarah said gravely. "Daniel has formally asserted his paternal rights. He is claiming that you are an unfit mother who orchestrated a character assassination campaign against him, and he is demanding full legal and physical custody of Sophie—along with an injunction freezing your foundation's assets."

Claire stood up so fast her leather chair rolled back into the glass wall. "He denied she was his daughter in front of five hundred people! He called her an extortion attempt!"

"I know," Sarah said, placing the court summons on the desk. "But Sterling is arguing that Daniel was acting under duress and confusion caused by your 'staged' confrontation at Ashford Hall. They are using your background against you, Claire."

"My background?" Claire asked, her voice dropping dangerously low.

"They brought up your years in the state foster care system," Sarah explained gently. "They are claiming that a woman who grew up in ward-of-the-state group homes without a father lacks the emotional stability to raise an heir to the Ashford legacy. The hearing is scheduled for tomorrow morning before Judge Evelyn Vance."

Claire looked out the floor-to-ceiling window at the gray, stormy waters of Lake Michigan.

She remembered the freezing cold nights in the state group home in South Peoria when she was twelve years old, clutching a thin blanket, promising herself that if she ever had a child, no one would ever make that child feel unwanted or unsafe.

"Call our litigation team, Sarah," Claire commanded, her eyes shining with cold, unshakeable determination. "Tell them to prepare the complete medical records from Saint Matthew’s Hospital. And call Detective Miller from the Chicago Police Department."

"Why Detective Miller?" Sarah asked.

"Because Daniel didn't just abandon me seven years ago," Claire whispered. "He paid his security driver forty thousand dollars to make sure I left the state. And I still have the original bank transfer slip."
