Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

By dawn the following morning, my study was transformed into a tactical command room. Digital maps of the city, financial flowcharts, and high-definition security camera feeds filled six monitors on my wall.

General Richter’s team had delivered beyond expectations.

Sterling Global Logistics was a massive front. Beneath their legitimate cargo shipping operations lay a dark, lucrative network of human trafficking, unregistered weapons transport, and massive bribery schemes involving three local precinct commanders and a state supreme court judge.

Victor Sterling wasn't just a corrupt businessman; he was an organized crime boss wearing a thousand-dollar suit.

Around 8:00 AM, the peaceful morning silence of my property was broken by the sound of approaching heavy vehicles.

I looked at my perimeter monitor. Three black SUVs with tinted windows had parked outside my main security gate. Six men in tactical gear stepped out, holding concealed sidearms under their jackets. Leading them was a tall, silver-haired man in a dark trench coat—Victor Sterling himself—accompanied by his bruised, bandaged son, Julian.

I picked up my oak cane, checked the modified 9mm Sig Sauer tucked into my shoulder holster, and walked out onto the front porch, leaving Maya safely inside the reinforced panic room downstairs.

"Karl Weber!" Victor Sterling shouted over the gate intercom, his voice dripping with condescension and arrogant power. "Open this gate! You have twenty seconds before my men breach your property and take my daughter-in-law back!"

I pressed the intercom button on the porch pillar. "You are standing on private land, Victor. I suggest you turn your convoy around before you commit a mistake your money cannot fix."

Victor laughed—a harsh, barking sound. "You stupid old peasant! Do you have any idea who I am?! I own the police force in this county! I own the judges! Your daughter signed a prenuptial agreement and a medical conservatorship three months ago! Legally, she belongs to my family's custody!"

Julian stepped up beside his father, a heavy white bandage wrapped tightly around his wrist, pointing a finger at me through the iron bars. "You broke my wrist, you old bastard! You're going to rot in a state prison for the rest of your miserable life! Give us Maya, or we'll burn this house to the ground with you inside it!"

I took a remote control from my pocket and pressed a button.

The heavy iron gates hummed to life, sliding open slowly.

Victor’s security team instantly reached into their jackets, pulling out silenced pistols, stepping forward in a tactical formation. They were former private military contractors—competent, but arrogant.

"You think opening the gate saves you?" Victor sneered, stepping onto my driveway.

"I opened the gate so your security team doesn't ruin my wrought-iron fence when they fall," I said calmly, stepping off the porch onto the gravel.

"Take him down!" Victor ordered coldly. "Keep the old man alive just long enough to sign the non-disclosure agreements!"

The lead contractor lunged forward, reaching for my throat with a swift, lethal hand strike.

He never touched me.

I shifted my weight on my cane, ducked beneath his arm, and drove the heavy brass tip of my cane directly into his knee cap!

CRACK!

The contractor shrieked as his knee buckled backward, and before he hit the ground, I executed a swift palm-heel strike to his chin, knocking him unconscious instantly!

The second contractor raised his weapon—BANG!—a shot went wild into the trees as I slammed my elbow into his solar plexus, grabbed his wrist, twisted it until the bone popped, and stripped his weapon in a single fluid motion!

In less than six seconds, four of Victor’s top security men were sprawling on the gravel, groaning in agony with dislocated joints and fractured bones! The remaining two contractors backed away slowly, their weapons lowered, their eyes wide with absolute horror as they realized what kind of monster they were dealing with.

Victor Sterling froze, his face losing every bit of color.

I stepped over the unconscious men, stopping three feet from Victor and Julian. I raised the stripped pistol, pulled the magazine out, cleared the chamber, and let the steel parts fall to the ground with a rhythmic metallic clatter.

"Who... who the hell are you?" Victor stammered, his voice trembling for the first time in his life.

"I am the man who gives you one final warning," I said, looking Victor dead in the eye. "Go back to your mansion. Call your lawyers. Call your corrupt judges. Gather every dollar you have. Because tomorrow morning... I am taking everything from you."
