Chapter 2 - The Fortress and the File

Thirty minutes later, my vintage Mercedes-Benz sedan pulled into the gated driveway of my secluded property in the hills three miles outside the city limits.

My home wasn't a gilded mansion like the Sterling estate. It was a reinforced stone house surrounded by high timber fencing, discreet thermal motion sensors, and an encrypted satellite communications array disguised as a regular TV dish. To the locals, I was Karl Weber, a retired hardware importer. To the international security community, I was Commander Weber—the man who had dismantled three illegal arms cartels across Eastern Europe.

I helped Maya inside, sitting her down on the plush sofa in front of a roaring stone fireplace. I brought her a thick wool blanket, a warm cup of sweet tea, and a specialized medical kit.

For two hours, I cleaned the cuts on her feet, bandaged her bruised wrists, and listened as the nightmare of her three-year marriage spilled out.

"It started six months after the wedding, Dad," Maya whispered, staring into the flames with hollow, traumatic eyes. "At first, it was just control. He didn't want me seeing my friends. Then he took my phone, my credit cards, my passport. Whenever I tried to leave, his father’s security team threatened to ruin your small hardware business... they said they would frame you for tax fraud."

My jaw set like cast iron. "His father, Victor Sterling, knew about this?"

"Victor authorized it," Maya wept softly. "Julian has a violent temper when he drinks. Whenever Julian got too out of control in public, Victor would cover it up. They kept me locked in the pool house whenever international business clients visited the estate so I wouldn't say anything. They treated me like an object they owned."

I reached out, gently cupping her chin, forcing her to look into my eyes.

"Listen to me, Maya," I said with absolute authority. "The Sterlings are powerful in this city because people fear their money. But money cannot buy protection from the storm that is coming for them. They think they can use the law and police chiefs to cover their tracks. They don't know who I used to be."

I stood up, walked into my private study behind a hidden bookshelf, and opened a heavy, fireproof steel safe. Inside lay my old NATO tactical tablet, an encrypted satellite phone, and three black leather dossiers marked with red seals.

I booted up the tablet. Within sixty seconds, the screen flashed with a high-level military security clearance code.

I picked up the satellite phone and dialed a ten-digit secure line.

The line connected on the second ring. A deep, authoritative voice spoke from four thousand miles away in Frankfurt.

"Commander Weber?" the voice answered in sharp German. "It has been seven years. We assumed you were permanently offline."

"I was, General Richter," I replied calmly. "Until an hour ago. I require an immediate intelligence drop on Sterling Global Logistics and its Chief Executive Officer, Victor Sterling. I need every private financial ledger, every shipping manifest passing through the Eastern Seaboard, and full access to their private server infrastructure."

General Richter paused on the other end. "Victor Sterling is a high-level government contractor, Karl. Investigating him requires top-tier clearance."

"He put my daughter in a cage, General," I said, my voice dropping into a register that made the seasoned general go silent. "He has twenty-four hours before I begin dismantling his empire piece by piece. Are you going to assist me, or do I need to fly to Europe and collect my old favors in person?"

"The files will be on your encrypted terminal in ten minutes, Commander," Richter said without hesitation. "Good hunting."
