Chapter 4 - unearthing the rot

"Major Vance, convene a classified briefing with the Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) immediately," I ordered the moment I stepped back into my headquarters.

"Ma'am, with all due respect, investigating a civilian family is highly irregular. We could run afoul of the Posse Comitatus Act," Vance warned, his brow furrowed.

"We aren't policing civilians, Major," I said, tossing a thick folder onto my desk. "The Ferguson Shipping Group holds a multi-million-dollar logistics subcontract with the Department of Defense. They transport sensitive, non-lethal military hardware to our East Coast naval bases. If the leadership of a defense contractor is committing felony abuse, bribing public officials, and threatening active-duty officers, they are a grade-two national security risk. We have every right to audit our contractors."

A slow grin spread across Vance's face. "Understood, Colonel. We will begin a comprehensive security and financial audit of the Ferguson Group immediately."

Over the next twenty-four hours, my office transformed into a tactical intelligence hub. Forensic accountants and military analysts systematically tore apart Ferguson Shipping’s tax filings, customs manifests, and offshore accounts.

What we found was a goldmine of corruption.

"Colonel, look at this," Vance said, pointing to a screen displaying a labyrinth of shell companies in Panama and the Cayman Islands. "Over the past three years, Ferguson Shipping has processed over two hundred million dollars in unexplained offshore deposits. These funds are immediately laundered through Patricia Ferguson's luxury real estate developments and charitable foundations."

"Is there a physical paper trail?" I asked.

"Worse. We found encrypted emails between Gregory Ferguson and several state port officials," Vance explained, dropping his voice. "They’ve been using military-cleared cargo containers—which bypass standard customs inspections—to smuggle unregistered high-end luxury goods and contraband into the country. They’ve been bribing judges and local police to kill any investigations. That's why they think they are untouchable."

I leaned back in my chair, tapping my desk. "So that's why they are terrified of Abigail divorcing Nicholas. If a divorce proceeds, the discovery process will expose their entire financial house of cards."

"Should we hand this over to the FBI?" Vance asked.

"Yes, but not yet," I replied with a cold smile. "I want them to feel completely safe, right before the floor drops beneath them. Tonight is the Ferguson Foundation's annual charity gala, isn't it?"

"Yes, Colonel. It’s the biggest social event of the year for the Charlotte elite."

"Perfect. Prepare my dress blues. We are going to attend—uninvited."
