Chapter 10 - a new dawn

Six months had passed since the final verdicts. The Ferguson name had vanished from the headlines, replaced by stories of new beginnings.
It was a beautiful Saturday evening. The autumn sun was setting over the rolling hills of North Carolina, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of deep orange, gold, and violet.
I stood on the back porch of our new home, a peaceful cottage by a lake just outside Charlotte. I had officially retired from the U.S. Army after thirty-two years of service. My dress uniform was neatly folded in a glass case in the study, but my duty as a mother would never end.
Down in the yard, Abigail was laughing with her design assistants. She had officially reopened her fashion studio under a new name: Dawn—representing her rebirth from the ashes. Her first collection was already receiving rave reviews.
She looked up, saw me watching, and ran up the porch steps to hug me. She smelled of fresh fabric and lavender.
"Thank you, Mom," she whispered, resting her head against my shoulder as we both looked at the horizon. "For everything."
I wrapped my arm around her, holding her close, feeling the steady, peaceful beat of her heart.
