Chapter 5 - Shadows into Light

Two months passed.
The spring sun had finally melted the snow across Westchester, turning the rolling lawns of the Moretti Estate into a vibrant sea of green.
Inside the estate's sunlit garden parlor, six-year-old Daniel was running across the grass, kicking a soccer ball, his laughter echoing off the stone walls. His cheeks were rosy with healthy color, his heart function entirely restored thanks to a successful minor procedure performed by the country's top pediatric surgeon—brought in personally by Gabriel.
Sitting on a wooden bench near the flowerbeds was Elena. She was wearing a simple summer dress, her injuries completely healed, though a very faint, almost invisible scar remained above her left eyebrow.
"Elena! Look! I scored!" Daniel cheered, kicking the ball into a small net and turning to wave at her frantically.
"I saw it, champion!" Elena laughed, giving him two thumbs up. "That was at least fifty yards!"
From the terrace above, Gabriel stood watching them. He was holding two glasses of fresh lemonade, wearing a tailored navy suit without a tie, his dark hair catching the warm sunlight. The cold, lethal killer who had ruled New York’s underbelly for a decade seemed to melt away whenever he was near his son—and the woman who had saved them both.
Gabriel walked down the stone steps, handing a glass of lemonade to Elena as he sat down beside her on the bench.
"He loves you, you know," Gabriel said softly, watching Daniel chase the soccer ball across the lawn. "He asks for you every morning before he even eats breakfast."
Elena smiled, sipping her drink. "He's an amazing kid, Gabriel. So smart... so brave." She hesitated, looking down at her glass, her smile fading slightly. "Dr. Aris gave me my final medical clearance this morning. He says my ribs are completely healed."
Gabriel stilled. His posture stiffened slightly, a dark shadow passing over his sharp eyes. "I see."
"My apartment in the city is fully restored," Elena continued quietly, looking out over the garden. "And... the trust fund you set up for me... Gabriel, it’s too much. I can never spend that kind of money. I should probably start looking for a new job next week."
Gabriel turned to face her completely. He set his glass on the wooden table, reaching out to gently take her hand into his large, calloused palm. Elena looked up, her breath catching as she met his dark, intense gaze.
"I don't want you to go back to that apartment, Elena," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into a rough, emotional whisper. "And I certainly don't want you sweeping floors for people who don't know your worth."
Elena’s heart began to hammer against her ribs. "Gabriel..."
"For five years, this house was a mausoleum," Gabriel admitted, his thumb lightly tracing the back of her hand. "I brought money into it. I brought weapons into it. I built walls to keep the world away from my son. But I didn't realize until the night I walked into Room 412 that I had built a prison."
He leaned in closer, his dark eyes searching her face with a raw, desperate vulnerability.
"You brought life back into this home, Elena," Gabriel whispered. "You saved my son's life with a broken mop handle, and you saved mine without even trying. I don't want you here as a guest, or an employee, or someone I owe a debt to."

"What do you want, Gabriel?" Elena whispered, her voice trembling with emotion.
"I want you to stay," Gabriel said simply. "With me. With Daniel. As long as you will have us."
