Chapter 3 - The Gathering of Storms

The next morning, the financial and high-society circles of New York were in absolute chaos.
The news of the federal seizure of Ravenshore and the abrupt cancellation of Grayson Langford’s annual gala had leaked to the press. Headlines screamed of old-money corruption, financial fraud, and a bitter, highly personal war between the Langford and Kane dynasties.
In his private study, Dominic sat behind his massive mahogany desk, reviewing a series of financial ledgers. Marcus stood across from him, holding a secure tablet.
"Grayson is desperate, boss," Marcus said. "He’s currently holed up at a penthouse in Manhattan owned by his associate, Carter Montgomery. He’s trying to liquidate his remaining assets in Europe, but we've already initiated the freeze orders through Judge Vance."
"He will try to find a back door," Dominic said, his voice cold. "What about Celeste and Paige?"
"They are trying to spin the story to the press," Marcus replied, pulling up a video clip on the tablet. "They are claiming that Harper has been suffering from severe mental instability and that you kidnapped her from the gala to use her as leverage in our corporate dispute."
Dominic’s eyes narrowed, a dark, dangerous light reflecting in their depths. "They want to play dirty. Fine. Let’s show them what real dirt looks like. Marcus, get me the file on Celeste’s charitable foundation."
"The one she uses to launder money for her private art collection?" Marcus smirked.
"Exactly. I want the IRS audit initiated by noon. And call the District Attorney. Tell him I have a witness who can verify the fraud."
"And who is the witness?"
"Me," a quiet voice said from the doorway.
Dominic looked up to see Harper standing there. She was wearing one of his oversized white button-down shirts, the sleeves rolled up, her splinted hand resting against her chest. She looked fragile, but her blue eyes were filled with a fierce, unbreakable determination.
"Harper, you should be in bed," Dominic said, standing up and walking over to her.
"I’m done hiding, Dominic," Harper said, her voice steady. "My father and Celeste have treated me like a shadow in my own family for twenty-six years. They used my mother’s inheritance to fund their lifestyle and locked me away when I asked questions. If they want to claim I’m unstable to save themselves, I’ll give the DA enough evidence to put them away for life."
Dominic stared at her, a profound sense of admiration washing over him. He had known many women in his life, but none who possessed this kind of quiet, resilient courage.
"They will try to tear you apart on the witness stand, Harper," Dominic warned gently. "They will bring up everything. Your mother’s death, your medical history, your isolation. They will try to make you look like a liar."
"Let them try," Harper said, stepping closer to him. "Because for the first time in my life, I’m not standing alone. I have you."
May you like
Dominic felt a strange, unfamiliar ache in his chest—a feeling of pure, protective devotion he had buried deep inside his heart years ago. He reached out, his hand gently cupping her chin, tilting her face up to his.
"You will never stand alone again, Harper," Dominic vowed, his voice thick with emotion. "I will burn their entire world to the ground before I let them hurt you again."
