Chapter 4 - The Shadow of Betrayal

Three weeks passed at the coastal estate.
Under Josie’s warm, steady presence, the dark granite castle slowly transformed into a real home. The heavy velvet drapes were pulled back to let the winter sunlight flood the high-ceilinged rooms. The grand hall, once silent as a tomb, now echoed with the sound of laughter, music, and the joyful barking of a golden retriever puppy that Constantine had bought for Mila’s seventh birthday.
Liam’s condition at Mass General had improved dramatically. The top specialist in New England, brought in personally by Constantine, had successfully performed the kidney transplant, and Liam was now recovering in a private suite, his medical future entirely secure.
For the first time in her adult life, Josie felt a sense of peace. But something deeper, something electric and intense, was growing between her and the quiet, powerful master of the estate.
Every evening after Mila fell asleep, Constantine and Josie sat in the grand library beside a roaring stone fireplace. They spoke for hours—not about the syndicate, blood debts, or dark business, but about their pasts, their dreams, and the quiet lives they wished they could live.
"You look different when you smile," Josie said one evening, holding a cup of tea as she sat on the leather sofa opposite him.
Constantine looked up from his leather-bound book, his dark eyes softening as he studied her face in the warm firelight. "I haven't had a reason to smile in a very long time, Josie. You have given my daughter her life back. And... you have given me mine."
He stood up, walking slowly across the Persian rug, stopping right in front of her. He reached down, gently taking her hand into his large, calloused palm.
"I know what people in this city call me," Constantine whispered, his thumb lightly tracing the sensitive skin of her wrist. "They call me a monster. A king of shadows. And they are not wrong. But when I am with you... I want to be the man my daughter thinks I am."
Josie looked up into his deep, dark eyes, feeling her heart race with a fierce, unmistakable heat. "You aren't a monster, Constantine. A monster doesn't spend every night watching his daughter sleep to make sure she’s breathing."
Constantine leaned down slowly, his face inches from hers, his breath warm against her lips. "Josie..."
Before their lips could meet, the heavy oak doors of the library burst open!
Viktor stood in the doorway, his face pale, holding a encrypted satellite phone in his hand.
"Boss," Viktor rasped, his voice tight with panic. "We have a massive problem. The federal task force and the State Police just issued a raid warrant for the estate. Someone leaked our private server coordinates and the financial ledgers to the US Attorney's office."
Constantine stood up instantly, his dark eyes snapping back into dangerous, tactical focus. "That information was stored on a physical drive in my vault. Only three people in this syndicate had the security clearance to access it."

Viktor swallowed hard, looking nervously at Josie before speaking.
"The digital signature used to unlock the vault half an hour ago..." Viktor hesitated. "...came from the computer terminal in Miss Morrow’s private suite."
