Chapter 3 - Shadows of Corporate Greed

By 1:00 AM, the storm outside the hospital raged, rain battering the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the VIP lounge on the eighth floor.

Donald Sterling—a ruthless billionaire venture capitalist and sixty percent shareholder of Vance Technologies—stepped out of the private elevator. He was seventy years old, impeccably tailored in a charcoal Italian wool suit, carrying a silver-topped cane. Behind him walked two tall men in dark suits with broad shoulders and sharp, unblinking eyes.

Ethan sat at the central mahogany table in the lounge, waiting for him. Leo was asleep on a nearby leather couch, wrapped in a fleece blanket Ethan had bought from the gift shop.

"Ethan," Sterling said, his rich baritone voice filling the room as he leaned on his cane. "I heard the miraculous news about little Maya. Truly, a divine intervention."

"It wasn't divine intervention, Donald," Ethan said coldly, not standing up to greet him. "It was a twelve-year-old homeless boy who noticed a physical anomaly that your $15 million 'AI-Powered Neurological Scanner' missed."

Sterling’s warm expression instantly dissolved, replaced by a cold, calculating mask. He pulled out a leather chair and sat across from Ethan.

"Let’s speak plainly, Ethan," Sterling said, placing his gloved hands over his cane. "Vance Technologies is three weeks away from launching its IPO on Wall Street. Our entire valuation—$4 billion—is built on the claim that our medical AI scanner achieves a 99.9% diagnostic accuracy rate. If the press learns that the scanner failed to detect a simple, life-threatening neck cyst on the founder's own daughter, our stock will collapse before the bell rings."

"My daughter almost died, Donald!" Ethan slammed his fist onto the table, making the water glasses rattle! "You bribed Lawson and the board to push a faulty machine into hospitals before the software was fully calibrated! You knew there were dead spots in the neck and spinal imaging algorithms!"

"I did what was necessary to secure our future!" Sterling snapped back, his eyes flashing with ruthless ambition. "Do you think great tech companies are built on perfection? They are built on momentum! A few software glitches are expected during early rollouts!"

"A glitch?" Ethan’s voice shook with rage. "You called my baby's near-death a glitch?!"

Sterling tilted his head toward the couch where Leo was sleeping peacefully. "And who is this street urchin? Lawson told me a homeless child interrupted a private medical consultation."

"He saved my daughter," Ethan said fiercely. "And I am taking him in. He will never sleep on the street again."

Sterling let out a soft, mocking chuckle. "How poetic. The noble founder adopts a pauper. But listen to me carefully, Ethan. Tomorrow morning, you will sign a non-disclosure agreement regarding Maya’s revised diagnosis. You will attribute her recovery to a 'delayed systemic reaction to the Vance AI treatment plan.' If you refuse, I will use my majority voting rights on the board to strip you of your CEO title, freeze your assets, and bury you in legal debt before sunrise."

Ethan stared at the old billionaire, realizing that the man he had considered a mentor for five years was nothing more than a predator.

"Get out of my sight, Donald," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a deadly, whisper-quiet register.

Sterling stood up slowly, smoothing his jacket. "You have until 8:00 AM to sign the agreement, Ethan. Think about your family. Think about what happens when you lose everything."

Sterling turned and walked back toward the elevator, his two security guards following close behind.

Ethan watched them leave, his heart pounding in his chest. He walked over to the couch, gently shaking Leo’s shoulder.

"Leo... wake up, buddy," Ethan said softly.

Leo rubbed his eyes, sitting up instantly. "Is Maya okay?"

"Maya is fine," Ethan smiled faintly, touching the boy’s head. "But we are in danger, Leo. We need to leave this hospital right now."
