Chapter 3 - The Broken Swan

The scent of rubbing alcohol and industrial disinfectant hung thick in the narrow corridors of St. Jude Hospice. The building was old, illuminated by flickering fluorescent lights that buzzed like trapped insects.

Julian rushed down the corridor of the second floor, pushing past startled nurses, with Lily held securely in his arms and four private security guards behind him.

"Room 204!" Marcus called out, pointing toward a door at the end of the hall.

Julian pushed open the door and stopped dead in his tracks.

On a narrow, squeaky hospital bed lay Eleanor Vance.

She was thin—a shadow of the vibrant, radiant woman who had once captivated stages in Paris, London, and New York. Her cheekbones were sharp, her skin pale, and her dark hair fell in dry strands over the white pillow. An oxygen tube rested beneath her nose, and a heart monitor beeped slowly, weakly, in the corner.

"Mommy!" Lily cried out, squirming out of Julian’s arms.

Lily ran to the side of the bed, climbing onto the small vinyl stool beside it, gently taking Eleanor’s frail, cool hand into her own tiny ones. "Mommy, wake up! I found him! I danced the swan song just like you taught me! I found Mr. Julian!"

The heart monitor’s rhythm spiked slightly. Beep... beep... beep...

Eleanor’s long eyelashes fluttered. Slowly, painfully, her dark brown eyes opened. They were cloudy with weakness, but the moment they landed on Lily, a spark of deep, motherly warmth lit up her face.

"Lily..." Eleanor whispered, her voice a raspy breath. "My baby... you're safe..."

Then, Eleanor’s eyes drifted upward, meeting Julian’s gaze.

Julian stood at the foot of the bed, tears streaming freely down his face. He walked over slowly, dropping to his knees beside the bed, taking Eleanor’s other hand, pressing his lips against her cold knuckles.

"Eleanor," Julian sobbed, his voice cracking with fifteen years of buried heartbreak. "My God, Eleanor... what happened to you? Why didn't you come to me?"

Eleanor looked at him, her lips trembling. "I couldn't, Julian... she... she threatened to destroy you... she threatened to hurt our baby..."

"Who?" Julian asked, his voice dropping into a deadly, icy register. "Who did this to you?"

"Victoria," Eleanor whispered, a tear sliding down her hollow cheek into her hair. "The night before the premiere... fifteen years ago... I discovered I was pregnant with Lily. I went to the studio late to tell you... but Victoria was there."

Julian’s blood ran cold as ice.

"She gave me a drink..." Eleanor continued, her breathing heavy as the story poured out of her. "It was laced with a nerve toxin... meant to permanently damage my motor reflexes so I could never perform again. She wanted the principal role. She wanted the Vance legacy. She threatened that if I ever told you or returned to New York, her family's contacts would ruin your reputation and ensure I was committed to a private asylum."

"I was terrified for our baby," Eleanor sobbed weakly, clutching Julian’s hand with what little strength she had left. "I ran away... I lived in hiding in rural Pennsylvania... working small jobs to raise Lily. But three months ago... the nerve damage returned... my heart started failing... I knew I was dying, Julian. I couldn't leave our daughter alone in the world."

Julian listened, his hands trembling with absolute, murderous rage. The woman he had treated like family, the woman he had elevated to prima ballerina, had poisoned his true love, stolen her life, and forced his child to grow up in poverty.

"Dr. Evans!" Julian yelled toward the doorway, where his private medical team was waiting. "Prepare her for immediate transfer to the Presbyterian Medical Center penthouse suite! Bring the chief of neurology and the head of cardiology! Money is no object!"

"Yes, Mr. Hayes!" the doctor responded, immediately springing into action.

Julian leaned down, resting his forehead gently against Eleanor’s. "You're safe now, Eleanor. Both of you. I will never let anyone hurt you again. And as for Victoria... she is going to pay for every single second she stole from us."
