Chapter 4: Healing the Broken Pieces
Chapter 4: Healing the Broken Pieces
The weeks that followed were a chaotic storm of media headlines, court hearings, and public outrage. Victoria Langley’s arrest dominated the news, and as the evidence of her family's corruption came to light, her father’s empire crumbled within days. Victoria was denied bail, facing a minimum of fifteen years in a state penitentiary for kidnapping, conspiracy, and aggravated assault.
But inside the Whitmore estate, the world had gone entirely quiet.
Adrian had canceled all his business meetings, locked the grand gates of the mansion, and dedicated every hour to the two people he had nearly lost forever. It wasn't an easy transition. Seven months of trauma couldn't be washed away by a luxury lifestyle.
In the mornings, Elena would sit by the tall windows overlooking the lake, watching the waves. She still flinched when someone entered the room too quickly, and she refused to use the grand staircase, preferring the small service elevator instead.
Adrian approached her softly one afternoon, holding two cups of coffee. He had traded his sharp designer suits for a simple gray sweater, trying to bring back the comfort of the quiet Sundays they used to share.
"You don't have to stay in this house if it hurts you, Elena," Adrian said quietly, kneeling beside her chair just as he had done on the night she returned. "We can leave tomorrow. We can buy a small house by the shore, anywhere you want. I just want you to feel safe."
Elena looked down at her lap, then turned her gaze to the carpet where little Grace was crawling, happily chasing a stuffed bunny. "It's not the house that scares me, Adrian. It's the fear that I'll wake up and find out this is all a dream. That I'm still in that cold clinic room, and my baby isn't really here."

Adrian reached out, gently taking her hand. He didn't pull away when she trembled slightly; instead, he held it firmly, smoothing his thumb over the fading bruise on her wrist. "I swear to you, on my life, you are safe. I let them deceive me once. I will spend the rest of my days making sure nobody ever hurts you or Grace again."
For the first time in seven months, a tiny, genuine smile broke through Elena’s exhaustion.
