Chapter 3: The Web of Deceit Unravels
The interrogation room at the station was cold, but the heat inside the Whitmore mansion's private study was far worse. Adrian sat behind his mahogany desk, his tie loosened, staring at the documents Elena had brought. Beside him sat Detective Harrison, an old family friend who handled things quietly—but this time, there was no covering it up.
Elena sat on the leather sofa across from him, wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket Adrian had brought her himself. She was finally warm, but her hands still shook as she held a cup of chamomile tea. Little Grace was fast asleep in the next room, guarded by two trusted security officers.
"It wasn't just Victoria," Elena whispered, her voice cracking as she relived the nightmare. "The night she pushed me... I fell down the stairs in the guest house. I thought I was losing the baby. I begged her to call 911. But she stood over me, Adrian. She just watched me bleed. Then she called her father’s private fixer."
Detective Harrison leaned forward, looking at the Walgreens pharmacy bag containing the medical logs. "The driver took her to a private clinic outside the city limits, not Northwestern Memorial. They registered her under a fake name, claiming she was a homeless Jane Doe suffering from a drug-induced psychosis. Victoria used her family's political connections to keep Elena heavily sedated in a restricted ward for months."
Adrian’s fist slammed onto the desk, rattling the glass inkwell. "And the baby? How did Victoria keep my daughter hidden?"
"She didn't keep her hidden from everyone," Elena said, looking up with tears spilling over her lashes. "She paid a private nurse at the facility to care for Grace in an apartment blocks away, intending to leave the country with her after the wedding. She was going to present Grace to you later as an 'adopted orphan' to secure her place in your life forever. But three days ago, that nurse grew a conscience. She helped me escape."

The door to the study burst open, and Margaret Whitmore walked in, her face pale. "Adrian... Chief Langley is on the phone. Victoria’s father is threatening to ruin our family’s firm if we don’t drop the charges. He says it’s his word against a maid’s daughter."
Adrian stood up, his eyes flashing with a dangerous, protective fire. "Tell Chief Langley that he can use whatever money he has left to buy his daughter a good lawyer. Because tomorrow morning, I am releasing these security logs to the press. The Langley name is finished in Chicago."
