Chapter 5 - The Darkest Hour before the Dawn

Two months passed. The winter chill settled over Charleston, but inside the Harbor Point estate, there was warmth.

The triplets had finally been discharged from the NICU. The nursery was filled with the soft sounds of baby monitors, gentle lullabies, and the scent of lavender and baby powder. Under Mara’s loving care, Hope, Christian, and Leo were thriving, their chubby cheeks filling out, their bright eyes full of life.

But the corporate and legal battles had taken a heavy toll on Mara.

Grant Hale and Vanessa Cole, though indicted, were out on bail, funded by some remaining hidden offshore assets. Desperate and cornered, they had hired a ruthless, high-priced defense attorney who was launching a brutal public relations campaign, painting Mara as a bitter, power-hungry sister who had manipulated a dying woman to steal a corporate empire.

On a cold, rainy Tuesday night, Mara sat in the grand study of the mansion, surrounded by legal briefs and financial statements. She looked exhausted, her eyes sunken, her hand trembling as she held a cup of chamomile tea.

"You need to rest, Mara," Julian Vance said gently, entering the room and placing a hand on her shoulder. "You’ve been running on empty for weeks. The custody hearing is tomorrow, and you need to be sharp."

"I can't rest, Julian," Mara whispered, tears of fatigue welling in her eyes. "Their attorney is going to accuse me of fabricating the DNA test. They’ve subpoenaed Dr. Morrison, the embryologist. Grant’s lawyers have paid him off to lie, to say that he did swap the sperm, and that the DNA lab made a mistake. If the judge believes them, Grant could get temporary custody. I can't let him near those babies, Julian. I promised Evelyn."

"We will find a way, Mara," Julian promised. "We have the truth on our side."

Suddenly, the security alarm of the estate began to blare, a loud, piercing wail that shattered the quiet night.

Mara jumped up, her heart stopping. "The babies!"

She ran out of the study and up the stairs toward the nursery, her heart in her throat. Below, Mrs. Gable was screaming.

"Miss Mara! Someone broke through the kitchen window!"

Mara burst into the nursery. The room was dark, the only light coming from the glowing baby monitors. Standing over Christian’s crib was a shadow—a man in a dark hoodie, his hand reaching down toward the sleeping infant.

"Step away from him!" Mara shrieked, throwing herself at the intruder with a ferocity she didn't know she possessed.

She grabbed his arm, pulling him away from the crib. The man struggled, pushing her hard against the changing table, sending a shelf of baby lotions crashing to the floor. But Mara didn't let go. She bit his hand, clawing at his face, screaming for help.

"Julian! Security! Help!"

The intruder cursed, striking her across the face. Mara fell to the floor, her vision blurring as she tasted copper in her mouth. Through her haze, she saw the man reach into his pocket and pull out a syringe. He was going to harm the children.

But before he could step toward the cribs again, Julian Vance burst into the room. With a roar of anger, Julian tackled the intruder to the ground, pinning him to the carpet and twisting his arm behind his back.

"I’ve got him!" Julian yelled as the estate’s security guards flooded into the room, their flashlights illuminating the scene.

The guards quickly handcuffed the intruder, pulling back his hood.

Mara, gasping for breath as she held Hope and Leo close to her chest, gasped. It was Dr. Morrison—the disgraced embryologist.

"He was trying to contaminate the babies' medical records... or worse," Julian said, picking up the fallen syringe. "This contains a high dose of an allergen. He wanted to make them sick, to prove they were 'unsafe' under your care."

"No... no," Dr. Morrison whimpered, his face covered in scratches from Mara's fingernails. "Grant... Grant made me do it. He said if I didn't get rid of the evidence, he would expose my offshore accounts. He paid me to do this!"

Mara stood up, her face bruised but her eyes shining with an absolute, terrifying triumph.

"Did you get that, Julian?" she asked, her voice steady.

May you like

Julian smiled, holding up his phone, which was recording a live high-definition video. "Every single word. And so did the Charleston Police Department dispatch."

"Take him away," Mara commanded the guards. She looked down at the trembling doctor. "And tell Grant Hale that his game is finally, officially, over."
