Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Exorcism

The conference room of Hale Shipping was a temple of old-money power, mahogany-paneled walls lined with oil paintings of historic vessels.

At 2:00 p.m., the board of directors sat in stunned silence.

At the head of the table sat Grant Hale, his expression smug and confident. To his right sat Vanessa Cole, who had insisted on attending, claiming she was there as Grant’s "personal advisor" and the future matriarch of the Hale estate.

"This meeting is a formality," Grant announced, leaning back in his leather chair. "My wife’s unfortunate passing has left me in sole control of her family's shares. Together with my own holdings, I now control 62% of Hale Shipping. I propose an immediate vote to merge our logistics division with Cole Holdings, streamlining our operations."

"I object," a calm, clear voice said from the back of the room.

The heavy mahogany doors swung open, and Mara Bennett walked in. She was dressed in a sharp, tailored black suit, her hair pulled back into a flawless, professional bun. Beside her was Julian Vance and Dr. Evelyn’s estate attorney, Arthur Pendelton.

"Mara," Grant sneered, his eyes narrowing. "You have no standing in this boardroom. Security, remove this woman."

"Do not touch her," Arthur Pendelton warned the security guards, stepping forward and placing a stack of legal documents on the table. "As the executor of the Evelyn Hale Estate, I am here to inform the board that Mr. Grant Hale’s voting rights have been suspended indefinitely, effective immediately."

The board members began to whisper frantically.

"Suspended?" Grant laughed, though his voice lacked its usual certainty. "On what grounds? I am her husband. The shares pass to me!"

"They would have," Mara said, walking to the head of the table and looking down at Grant. "If the children Evelyn delivered last Thursday were yours. But they aren't, Grant."

Vanessa stood up, her voice screeching. "This is a lie! We know those babies are Grant’s! You’re just trying to stall because you’re greedy!"

"Julian, project the lab report," Mara commanded.

Julian tapped his tablet, and the massive digital screen on the wall illuminated, displaying the certified DNA paternity test from St. Catherine’s Medical Center.

The board members gasped as they read the name of the biological father: Thomas Edward Sterling.

"This is a fake!" Grant roared, his face turning an ugly shade of purple as he slammed his fists on the table. "Thomas Sterling is dead! He’s been dead for three years! How could a dead man father triplets?"

"Because your late wife was smarter than you, Grant," Mara said, her voice cutting through his panic like a knife. "She knew you bribed Dr. Morrison at the fertility clinic to swap the genetic material. She let you believe the swap happened. But she ensured that Thomas’s embryos were the ones implanted. The triplets—Hope, Christian, and Leo—are the legal, biological heirs to the Sterling estate. And under the terms of the Sterling-Hale joint venture agreement, if Thomas has a living heir, 51% of Hale Shipping’s parent stock immediately reverts to the Sterling Trust."

"No... no, this can't be," Calvin Moore whispered, his legal mind quickly calculating the ruinous implications. "The trust... the shares... they're gone."

"Which means, Grant," Mara continued, leaning down until her face was inches from his, "you don't own 62% of this company. You own 11%. And as the sole trustee of both the Hale Estate and the Sterling Trust, I am voting to terminate your employment as CEO of Hale Shipping, effective immediately. For cause."

"For cause?" Grant stammered, his eyes darting around the room, looking at the board members who were already turning away from him, realizing he was dead weight. "What cause?"

"Embezzlement, corporate fraud, and conspiracy," Julian Vance said, stepping forward with another folder. "We have the forensic audit of the offshore accounts you set up in Vanessa Cole's name. You’ve been skimming corporate funds to pay for her luxury lifestyle, pretending they were 'consulting fees.' The FBI has already been notified. They are waiting downstairs."

Vanessa’s knees buckled. She sank back into her chair, her face pale, her eyes wide with terror as she looked at the door. "Grant... Grant, do something! You promised me we would own this company! You promised me the mansion!"

"Shut up, Vanessa!" Grant screamed, his composure completely shattered. He glared at Mara, his eyes wild with a feral hatred. "You think you can destroy me? I will fight this in court! I will prove those babies are a result of medical fraud! I’ll have them taken away from you!"

"The only place you’re going, Grant, is a federal penitentiary," Mara said softly. "Security, please escort Mr. Hale and Ms. Cole off the premises. And make sure the FBI agents waiting in the lobby have a clear path to the elevator."

As the security guards, who had once bowed to Grant, grabbed him by the arms and dragged him out of the room, his screams of rage echoed down the corridor. Vanessa followed, weeping hysterically, trying to cover her face as she realized her dream of high-society dominance had turned into a public nightmare.

Mara looked around the silent boardroom, then at the empty leather chair at the head of the table.

"Meeting adjourned, gentlemen," she said quietly.
