CHAPTER 5 — “THE SECOND CHILD”

CHAPTER 5 — “THE SECOND CHILD”
That night changed everything.
Olivia found the first record.
A birth certificate.
Dated two years before I was born.
Name redacted.
But the hospital code was the same.
Mercy General.
The same place I was abandoned.
“There was another child,” she said.
I stared at the paper.
“That’s impossible.”
But it wasn’t.
Because buried in my father’s financial records was a second medical account.
Paid in full.
For one child.
Not me.
My mother’s voice came back to me in fragments from court.
“We are not destroying a promising future for an average one.”
Average.
They hadn’t meant me.
They had meant comparison.
And suddenly I understood why I was never truly valued.
I wasn’t the first calculation.
I was the second attempt.
We found her two weeks later.
A woman in Boston.
Same last name I had abandoned.
Emily Parker was not dead.
She was alive.
And she was a pediatric nurse.
Working under a different identity.
When I met her, she didn’t cry.
She just looked at me like someone recognizing a lost reflection.
“I thought they told you I didn’t exist,” she said.
“I thought I was the only one,” I replied.

She shook her head.
“They never wanted both of us.”
