CHAPTER 2 — “THE WARD OF THE STATE”

CHAPTER 2 — “THE WARD OF THE STATE”

The silence after my father’s words was not empty.

It was surgical.

Dr. Collins didn’t move at first. He looked at my parents the way he once looked at lab results that refused to make sense—like he was trying to find the human logic inside something rotten.

“She’s not an expense sheet,” he said finally.

My mother’s voice sharpened. “She is our daughter. That gives us legal authority.”

“No,” Olivia’s voice cut through the room.

She had been standing behind me the entire time. I didn’t even hear her enter.

“I became her legal guardian ten years ago,” Olivia said calmly. “You signed those rights away when you abandoned her treatment.”

My father scoffed. “You’re a nurse. Not family.”

Olivia smiled—small, precise, dangerous.

“No,” she said. “I’m the one who paid for the chemotherapy you refused.”

That sentence landed harder than any shout.

The hospital lawyer arrived within minutes. Papers followed. Old signatures resurfaced. Digital records. Emergency custody termination. Adoption approval.

My mother’s face changed slowly as she realized something unbearable.

They had already lost me.

They just hadn’t bothered to notice.

“You can’t just erase us,” she whispered.

I finally spoke.

My voice was steady. “You did that yourselves fifteen years ago.”

No one interrupted after that.

But the story didn’t end there.

Because my father was not the kind of man who accepted loss.

He adapted.

And adaptation, in his world, meant revenge.

That night, Olivia and I left the hospital through a side exit.

“You did well up there,” she said softly.

“I didn’t feel anything,” I replied.

“That’s not true.”

I didn’t answer, because it was.

My phone vibrated before we reached the car.

Unknown number.

One message.

We will correct this.

Olivia read it over my shoulder.

Her hand tightened on the steering wheel.

“They’re going to fight,” she said.

“I know.”

“And you’re ready?”

May you like

I looked out at the city lights.

“I’ve been ready since I was thirteen.”
