Chapter 2 - The Empire Learns Who Holds the Pen

By nine that morning, every senior attorney employed by the Cross family had been summoned to the estate.
Not because someone had died.
Because someone had signed.
The original Cross Legacy Charter, drafted in 1891, lay unfolded across the conference table. Charles Cross jabbed a finger at a paragraph few people had ever bothered to read.
"If the hereditary designation is interrupted, trustees must determine whether the family remains eligible for unified succession."
One attorney adjusted his glasses.
"Legally, Mrs. Cross did nothing wrong."
Charles slammed his fist on the table.
"I didn't ask if she broke the law."
He lowered his voice.
"I asked whether my son just jeopardized everything."
No one answered.
Because they already knew the truth.
At the hospital, Damon arrived carrying flowers, breakfast, and a diamond bracelet.
Elise looked at none of them.
Instead, she was watching Aurora sleep.
"You should eat."
"I already have."
"I brought your favorite."
"You brought it eight hours too late."
He sat quietly.
"I was trying to protect the family."
She finally looked at him.
"Which family?"
His mouth opened.
Closed again.
Meanwhile, Dr. Whitfield entered carrying paperwork.
"Mr. Cross."
"Doctor."
"There is one more document requiring acknowledgment."
Damon reached for the file.
Dr. Whitfield gently moved it away.
"I'm afraid only Mrs. Cross can authorize this."
Elise signed without asking his opinion.
One signature after another.
Emergency guardianship.
Medical authority.
Temporary parental decisions.
Every blank space where Damon expected to write his name...
remained empty.
That afternoon, Charles Cross arrived in person.
The entire hospital floor stiffened.
He had built an empire capable of influencing senators, judges, and billion-dollar mergers.
Yet when he entered Room 904, Elise did not stand.
She didn't even look surprised.
Charles studied Aurora.
Then Elise.
"My granddaughter is beautiful."
"She is."
"I understand emotions were high."
"They were."
"I'm sure Damon regrets his mistake."
"He regrets being caught by consequences."
Charles sighed.
"What do you want?"
She smiled faintly.
"There it is."
May you like
"What?"
"The first honest question anyone from this family has asked me."
