Chapter 4 - The Ambush in Queens

Two weeks later, the inevitable clash came.
Don Carmine, driven mad by his loss of territory and status, staged a desperate, lawless assault. He ambushed Alessandro’s convoy as it traveled through an industrial district in Queens.
Garbage trucks blocked the intersection, and automatic gunfire shattered the quiet afternoon.
CRACK! CRACK! CRACK!
Alessandro’s Mercedes took several heavy hits, the bulletproof glass spider-webbing under the assault. Marco slammed on the brakes, drawing his weapon.
“Boss! It’s Carmine’s men! They brought heavy firepower!” Marco yelled over the deafening noise.
Alessandro’s face turned to stone, but it was not the reckless rage of his youth—it was the cold, lethal focus of a man who had everything to lose.
“Flank them,” Alessandro commanded, unholstering his weapon. “We end this today. I will not let these ghosts haunt my family’s future.”
Alessandro stepped out of the vehicle into the chaos. Using tactical precision, he and his elite guards dismantled Carmine’s ambush within minutes. The mercenaries dropped their weapons and fled as Alessandro’s reinforcements flooded the street.
Alessandro walked through the smoke, stopping in front of Don Carmine, who sat bleeding against the wheel of a wrecked sedan.
Carmine looked up, trembling, coughing up blood. “You... you destroyed my family, Moretti...”
“You destroyed yourself, Carmine,” Alessandro said, pointing his gun directly at Carmine’s chest. “You targeted innocent people, used children as pawns, and broke every code of honor.”
Carmine closed his eyes, preparing for the fatal shot.
Alessandro stared at the man. In the past, he would have pulled the trigger without a second thought. But then, in the silence between his heartbeats, he remembered Emma’s innocent voice: “You look like the loneliest man in the whole park.”
He remembered the promise he had made to himself—that he would build a world Emma and Sophia could live in without blood on their doorstep.
Slowly, Alessandro lowered his gun.
“You aren't worth the blood on my hands,” Alessandro said coldly. “Federal agents are raiding your estate as we speak. You will spend the rest of your life in a federal prison cell.”

Marco stepped up, handing Alessandro a handkerchief to wipe the dust from his suit. “It’s over, boss. The Carmine family is completely dismantled.”
Alessandro looked up at the sky as the rain began to fall gently. “Yes,” he whispered. “It’s over.”
