Chapter 4 - The Strategic Counterstrike

By the second week of the corporate freeze, the drama shifted from the construction sites to the legal arena. Ethan and Ashley hadn't gone quietly; they had dug themselves into a desperate bunker, guided by Ashley's father, the real estate partner, who was attempting to use every bureaucratic loophole in the state to force a corporate dissolution of Mercer Holdings Group.

I sat at the kitchen table on a Tuesday evening, the smell of fresh beef stew filling the room. Linda was standing by the stove, her posture relaxed, her face peaceful as she hummed a soft tune. The gate code had been restored to our anniversary date, and the smart locks had been completely stripped from the property, replaced by high-grade traditional deadbolts that required a real, heavy key.

Marcus Vance was sitting opposite me, his laptop open alongside a stack of certified mail receipts.

"Ashley’s father is playing a dangerous game, Tom," Marcus said, tapping a document with his pen. "He’s filed a petition with the state business registry alleging that you are suffering from cognitive decline, and that your sudden freezing of the corporate assets is a manifestation of medical incompetence. He’s asking for an emergency guardianship order that would place Ethan in control of your voting shares."

Linda paused by the stove, her wooden spoon freezing mid-air. "Cognitive decline? Tom has been running three multi-million dollar job sites by himself for the last ten days because Ethan didn't track the inventory properly!"

"I know, Linda," Marcus said gently, offering a reassuring smile. "It’s a desperation play. In the legal world, we call it a smear strike. If they can tie Tom up in a mental competency evaluation for ninety days, the Henderson contract will default, the company will face immense penalties, and a court-appointed receiver might force a liquidation of the holding company’s assets—including this house."

I took a deep breath, looking down at my calloused hands. "They want a medical evaluation, Marcus?"

"They’ve scheduled a preliminary hearing before Judge Henderson on Friday morning," Marcus nodded. "Ashley’s father has retained a private psychologist who is prepared to testify based on 'affidavits' provided by Ethan and Ashley regarding your 'erratic behavior' at the job site."

I smiled, a cold, slow grin that made Marcus sit up a little straighter. "Marcus, call Dr. Charles Albright. He’s been my primary physician for thirty years, and he’s the chief of neurology at the university hospital. Tell him I want a full, comprehensive cognitive and neurological screening completed by tomorrow afternoon. I want brain scans, memory tests, and stress evaluations. Every test available."

"And then?" Marcus asked, his eyes widening.

"And then, I want you to subpoena the personal bank accounts of Ashley’s father’s real estate firm," I said, leaning forward. "Look at the transaction history from EA Development LLC. I’m willing to bet that the eighty-four thousand dollars Ethan embezzled didn't just sit in a Delaware account. I think he used it to pay off the back taxes on Ashley’s father’s failing commercial building downtown."

Marcus’s jaw dropped slightly, then a massive, predatory smile spread across his face. "Tom... if that money was used to shore up her father's firm, that’s not just embezzlement anymore. That’s a multi-party conspiracy to commit grand larceny. Her father isn't just representing them—he’s an accessory after the fact."

"He wanted to look at my brain, Marcus," I said, standing up and walking over to Linda, wrapping my arms around her waist as she leaned against my chest. "Let’s see how his looks under a federal microscope."
