Chapter 5 - The Labor of Love

Julian Vance’s arrest sent shockwaves through Chicago’s financial and political circles. Within forty-eight hours, Vance Maritime went bankrupt, its assets absorbed legally and cleanly into Drake Harbor Logistics.

The dark shadow that had hung over Lucas’s life for a quarter of a century was erased once and for all.

Three weeks later, on a snowy Friday evening in late July, Bella was sitting in the nursery at Oakbrook Manor, putting the finishing touches on a hand-painted mural of Lake Michigan on the wall.

Suddenly, a sharp, intense pain shot through her lower abdomen.

Bella gasped, dropping her paintbrush, her hands clutching her belly.

Gush.

Warm fluid splashed across the hardwood floor. Her water had broken.

“Clara!” Bella called out, her breath hitching as another powerful contraction rippled through her body.

Within minutes, the estate was in motion. Clara alerted security, and Vincent pulled the specialized medical SUV around to the front entrance.

Lucas, who was in the middle of an executive board meeting downtown, received the call on his direct line.

"Boss, it’s time," Vincent said over the speaker.

Lucas stood up so fast his leather chair flipped backward onto the carpet. Without saying a word to the shocked board members, he bolted out of the boardroom, sprinting toward the private elevator like a man possessed.

He drove his own car through the Chicago snowstorm, running three red lights with his emergency flashers blazing, arriving at Lakeshore Private Hospital in record time.

When he burst into the delivery suite, Bella was already in active labor, sitting on the hospital bed, sweating, her face pale as she breathed through a massive contraction.

“Bella!” Lucas threw his coat onto a chair, rushing to her side. He dropped to his knees, taking her hand in his, wiping the cold sweat from her forehead with a damp cloth. “I’m here. I’m right here.”

“You... you took your time!” Bella cried out, gripping his hand so tightly her knuckles turned white.

“I’m sorry, my love,” Lucas pleaded, his amber eyes overflowing with absolute devotion. “I’m here now. I’m not leaving your side.”

For the next four brutal hours, Lucas stayed right beside her. He didn't care about the blood; he didn't care about the pain. He let her squeeze his hand until his fingers were bruised, whispering words of love, strength, and encouragement into her ear through every scream and every push.

“You’re doing so well, Bella,” Lucas whispered, his voice thick with tears. “You’re the strongest woman in the world. Just a little more, my love. Bring our baby home.”

At 3:14 AM, a loud, magnificent, sharp cry filled the delivery room.

“It’s a boy!” Dr. Sterling announced, holding up a healthy, kicking baby covered in white vernix, his dark hair thick, his lungs screaming with vibrant life.

The nurses quickly cleaned the baby and wrapped him in a warm yellow blanket, placing him directly onto Bella’s bare chest.

Bella sobbed with pure, unadulterated joy, cradling her son against her heart.

Lucas leaned over the bed, gazing down at his newborn son. The baby opened his tiny eyes—a brilliant, striking amber color, identical to his father’s.

The small infant reached out his tiny, trembling fist and locked his tiny fingers around Lucas’s thumb.

Lucas collapsed against the side of the bed, burying his face into Bella’s neck, sobbing hysterically as his family held each other in the soft light of the delivery room.

“He’s beautiful,” Lucas wept. “He’s perfect, Bella.”

“What should we name him?” Bella asked softly, stroking her baby’s soft head.

Lucas looked up, his face full of profound love as he looked at Bella, then at his son.

“Leo,” Lucas whispered. “Leo Alexander Drake. Because his mother is a lioness who saved my life.”
