Chapter 4 - The Strike at the Docks

By the fifth month of her pregnancy, the dynamic inside Oakbrook Manor had transformed completely.

Bella was no longer a prisoner. She moved freely around the estate, accompanied by guards who treated her not as a captive, but as the revered lady of the house. Lucas spent every evening at home, leaving his corporate office early just to sit beside her in the gardens, reading books on child development and watching her belly grow.

A deep, quiet intimacy had blossomed between them—built not on money or fear, but on mutual respect and shared healing. Lucas had begun teaching her the intricate operational details of Drake Harbor, amazed by her razor-sharp financial mind.

“You’re better at spot-auditing shipping manifests than my chief CFO,” Lucas remarked one evening in his study, sitting beside her as she reviewed a ledger.

“I have an accounting degree from a top state university, Mr. Drake,” Bella smiled, nudging his shoulder. “You just hire overpaid consultants.”

Lucas laughed—a deep, booming, handsome sound that warmed the entire room. He leaned over and kissed her cheek softly, his large hand resting gently on her rounded stomach, feeling the baby kick against his palm.

“He’s active tonight,” Lucas murmured, his eyes full of tenderness.

“He knows his father is home,” Bella replied softly, resting her head on his broad shoulder.

Their peace, however, was short-lived.

At 11:00 PM that same night, Vincent burst into the study, his face dark with urgency.

“Boss, we have a crisis at Dock 42.”

Lucas immediately stood up, his protective instincts flaring. “What happened?”

“Vance’s men hijacked a high-value shipment of medical supplies meant for Lakeshore Children’s Hospital,” Vincent reported grimly. “They’ve locked down the terminal and brought in local news crews. Vance is claiming online that Drake Harbor is smuggling illegal weapons inside the hospital crates. He’s trying to get the Federal authorities to freeze your entire empire by midnight.”

Lucas’s jaw set tightly. “It’s a frame job.”

“A brilliant one,” Vincent admitted. “If the feds freeze your assets tonight, you lose your operational license tomorrow. Vance takes over the port contracts by default.”

Bella stood up, holding her belly, her accounting mind clicking into overdrive.

“Wait,” Bella said, stepping up to the desk. “Which shipping manifest did they use for Dock 42?”

Vincent blinked, surprised. “Manifest 809-B.”

“That manifest is a duplicate!” Bella declared firmly, her eyes sharp. “I was reviewing the harbor ledgers two days ago. Manifest 809-B was registered under an offshore shell company registered in the Cayman Islands—a company owned by Vance Maritime’s lead accountant, Gary Thomas! The real medical crates are stored at Warehouse 12 under Manifest 809-A!”

Lucas stared at her, a look of profound astonishment and pride sweeping across his face.

“If we show the feds the digital audit trail proving Vance created the duplicate manifest to pull the crates,” Bella continued, her voice filled with absolute confidence, “Vance isn't just stopped—he’s guilty of federal fraud and grand larceny on camera.”

Lucas grabbed her by the waist, pulling her up and kissing her deeply on the lips.

“You are brilliant, Bella Carter,” Lucas said, his eyes blazing with admiration.

“Vincent!” Lucas turned, his voice roaring with commander-level authority. “Get the federal task force on the line. Print every ledger page Bella just identified. We’re going to Dock 42.”

“Lucas, wait,” Bella said, gripping his forearm with worry. “Be careful. Vance is desperate.”

Lucas held her face between his hands, kissing her forehead tenderly. “I’ve been fighting ghosts for twenty-five years, my love. Tonight, I end them so I can come home to my wife.”

Wife.

The word hung in the air, sweet and powerful, as Lucas turned and strode out of the manor with his security detail.

Two hours later, at Dock 42, the trap collapsed on Julian Vance.

Surrounded by federal agents, news cameras, and heavy harbor police, Julian Vance stood near the stolen crates, expecting to see Lucas Drake dragged away in handcuffs.

Instead, Lucas walked onto the dock accompanied by the head of the Chicago Federal Bureau, holding the pristine digital audit trail prepared by Bella.

“Julian Vance,” the Federal Agent announced through a megaphone, raising his weapon. “You are under arrest for federal framing, cargo hijacking, and corporate fraud.”

Vance’s face turned pale as ash. He looked at Lucas, who stood tall under the harbor lights, his expression cold, calm, and victorious.

“How?” Vance screamed, thrashing as officers pinned his arms behind his back. “How did you find the Cayman trail? My accountants wiped it!”

Lucas stepped closer, leaning down to speak directly into Vance’s ear.

“My woman is a better accountant than anyone you could ever buy, Vance,” Lucas whispered darkly. “Your father burned my past. But you just ensured my family owns this city forever.”
