Chapter 5 - The Battle of Boston

The drive through the blizzard was a nightmare of gunfire and screeching tires. Dominic held Megan tightly in the back of the armored SUV, his hand pressing a warm cloth to her forehead as she screamed through another premature contraction.
"Focus on me, Meg. Just breathe. I’m right here," Dominic pleaded, his eyes filled with a desperate panic he had never felt in his entire life. He could handle bullets, betrayal, and war, but he was completely powerless against her pain.
Behind them, two black SUVs belonging to the Moretti family pursued them, guns blazing. The bullets sparked against the reinforced armor of Dominic's vehicle.
"They're gaining on us, Boss!" Viktor yelled from the driver's seat, steering violently through the icy roads.
Dominic looked down at Megan, who was pale, her lips trembling. "I love you, Dominic," she whispered, her eyes fluttering shut. "Save our baby."
"I am saving both of you!" Dominic snarled. He laid her gently on the seat, then turned toward the back window. He opened the weapon cache in the partition, pulling out a heavy-duty assault rifle.
"Viktor, slam the brakes on three," Dominic commanded. "One... two... three!"
The SUV screeched, fishtailing on the ice. Dominic rolled down his window, ignoring the freezing wind, and unleashed a hail of calculated fire into the windshield of the lead pursuit vehicle. The enemy SUV veered violently off the road, crashing into a concrete barrier and exploding into flames.
Dominic didn't stop. He targeted the tires of the second vehicle, sending it spinning out of control into a snowbank.
"Get us to the hospital!" Dominic ordered, slamming the window shut and pulling Megan back into his arms. "Hurry!"
When they arrived at the Boston Medical Center, Dominic’s men swarmed the entrance, securing the perimeter. Dominic carried Megan inside, screaming for doctors.
As she was wheeled into the emergency operating room for an emergency C-section, a nurse tried to stop Dominic at the door.
"Sir, you can't come in here—"
Dominic glared at her with such raw, terrifying intensity that the nurse gasped. "That is my family in there. If you want to live to see tomorrow, you will let me hold her hand."
The doctor nodded quickly, signaling Dominic to follow.

For the next two hours, Dominic stood by Megan's head, whispering words of love and devotion, shielding her eyes from the bloody reality of the surgery. He didn't care about the war waiting outside. His entire universe was reduced to the woman on the table.
And then, a tiny, sharp cry pierced the sterile air of the operating room.
