Chapter 3 - The Public Toast

"Everyone, if I could have your attention please," I said, clinking a crystal glass with a heavy silver spoon. The lively chatter in the grand ballroom died down instantly. Fifty pairs of wealthy, influential eyes turned toward me. Ethan and Lily stood side-by-side near the towering, tiered baby cake, looking like a smug, victorious couple waiting to receive their crown.

"As you all know, family has always meant the world to me," I began, my voice steady, carrying flawlessly across the high-ceilinged room. "When my father passed away, he left behind a legacy of absolute integrity, hard work, and immense fortune. He always told me to watch out for the people who love you for who you are, and to ruthlessly discard those who only love you for what you can provide."

Ethan smiled warmly, nodding in solemn agreement, completely oblivious to the legal noose tightening around his throat.

"Two weeks ago, I went to the hospital to welcome my new nephew," I continued, pulling my phone from my pocket and connecting it to the house’s state-of-the-art, built-in surround sound system via Bluetooth. "And outside Room 614, I heard something so profoundly beautiful, so revealing of human character, that I just had to record it to share with everyone here today. It captures the true essence of my husband and my sister's... deep, secret connection."

Ethan’s smile faltered. Lily’s face went dead pale in an instant.

"Claire, what are you doing?" Ethan whispered loudly, taking a sudden step forward, his hand reaching out to grab my arm. "This isn't the time for home videos or sentimental family recordings. Let's just do the toast."

"Oh, but it is, Ethan. It's the perfect time," I said, giving him a cold, empty smile as I pressed play on my screen.

The high-end speakers boomed, filling the entire estate with crystal-clear, high-definition audio: > “I only married Claire for her money... When the trust clears, we disappear. Claire will never know the baby is mine until it’s too late.” > “She still thinks you love her.” > “She thinks whatever I tell her. She's too blinded by her own grief to see what's right in front of her.”

The ballroom dropped into an absolute, suffocating silence. Gasping sounds echoed from the back of the room. The socialite bloggers, recognizing the scandal of the century, immediately lifted their phones, recording the audio and the horrified, frozen faces of Ethan and Lily in real-time.
