Chapter 5 - The Fall of Vale Holdings

By the time we walked back to the pavilion, the party had turned into a media circus. Paparazzi, who had originally been invited by Vanessa to document my public humilation, were now desperately snapping photos of Vanessa Vale being led away in handcuffs, barefoot, drenched in sea spray, and sobbing hysterically.

The wealthy guests who had laughed at me earlier now refused to even look me in the eye. They slunk away into the night, terrified that their own associations with the Vale family would bring the police to their doorsteps next.

Chief Vance approached Daniel and me as the last police cruiser pulled away.

"Excellent work, Captain," Vance said, offering me a warm smile. "Though I expect your retirement from the force is permanent this time?"

I looked at Daniel, who was watching me with a look of pure pride and devotion. I smiled, taking his hand. "Permanent, Chief. I think I’ve had enough excitement for one lifetime."

"The city owes you a debt we can never repay," Vance said, tipping his hat to us both before departing.

As the pavilion cleared out, the staff began turning off the glittering chandeliers. The grand, expensive illusion of Vanessa’s world was dark. Daniel turned me to face him, his hands gently resting on my waist, avoiding the torn fabric of my dress.

"I’m sorry," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "I’m sorry she put you through this. I should have stopped her months ago."

"You did exactly what I asked you to do," I said, leaning my forehead against his. "You gave her enough rope to hang herself. And she did."

He looked down at the pale, jagged scar on my ribs, his thumb gently tracing the edge of it. "She called you damaged. But to me, this is the most beautiful thing about you. It’s the proof that you are a survivor."
