Chapter 3 - The Digital Ghost of Detective Miller

Using the tip of a pocket knife, Mitchell carefully pried open the inner rim of Chloe’s locket. With a soft click, the tiny compartment popped open, revealing not a photograph, but a microscopic object that made both adults gasp: a tiny, high-capacity microSD card.

Mitchell’s hands shook as he slid the tiny card into the slot of his encrypted department tablet. The screen flickered, loading a single video file dated five years prior—timestamped precisely thirty-four minutes after the official police arrival time logged at the Cole household on the night of the murder.

The video opened with grainy, high-contrast footage filmed from a body-worn camera or a hidden dash-cam left running. It captured lead Detective Thomas Miller standing over Sarah Cole’s lifeless body in the master bedroom. But it was the audio that shattered the official narrative into irreparable pieces.

"Chief, the ballistics from the service weapon don't match the bullet fragments we pulled from the wall," a younger, trembling officer's voice echoed from the tablet's tiny speakers. "If an independent lab tests this firearm, the whole ballistics report falls apart in court."

On the screen, Detective Miller scoffed, aggressively pulling off his blood-stained latex gloves and tossing them onto the victim's vanity. "Then we don't send the real gun to the state lab, do we? We swap the barrel with the cold case pistol from the 9th District narcotics bust. Who’s going to question it? Cole is a broke, unemployed mechanic with no alibi and zero political backing; the public wants a vicious monster for this heinous crime, and we’re handing them one on a silver platter. Besides, the DA needs a massive win before the upcoming election cycle."

Judge Vance covered her mouth with both hands, hot tears spilling over her eyelids and tracking down her cheeks. "My God in heaven... They framed him. They systematically framed an innocent man just to cover up a botched investigation and guarantee a political victory."

"Miller retired two years ago with a full commendation and a fat pension down in Austin," Mitchell said, his jaw locked so tightly his teeth ached. "He thought he had buried every trace of this corruption. But we don't have days to process an appeal through normal channels. The execution is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. today."
