Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Kingdom

The glass doors of Vance Development Headquarters shattered under the weight of the state police ram at exactly 1:45 PM.
The media, tipped off not by Victoria’s PR firm but by an anonymous press release from the District Attorney's office, were already lined up across the street with high-definition cameras. The cameras captured every single detail of the collapse of the city's most elegant family dynasty.
I stood beside Naomi near the perimeter line, watching as employees in expensive business attire hurried out of the lobby, their faces pale with confusion.
Ten minutes later, Adrian was led out of the building. He was wearing the same dark gray suit he had worn to his office that morning, but his hands were secured behind his back in cold steel handcuffs. His hair was disheveled, and his eyes were wide with a frantic, animalistic panic as the camera flashes exploded around him. He saw me standing near the police cruiser, and for a brief second, his lips parted as if he wanted to scream an insult. But the officer pushed his head down, guiding him into the back seat of the vehicle without a shred of ceremony.
Then came Victoria.
She walked out under her own power, surrounded by three defense attorneys who were desperately trying to shield her face with their briefcases. Her expression was a mask of absolute, frozen rage. She didn't look at the cameras. She looked directly at me. As she passed within five feet of my position, she stopped, her voice a low, venomous hiss that carried over the clicking of the lenses.
"You think you’ve destroyed us, Claire?" Victoria whispered, her eyes narrow and dark. "We will be out on bail by midnight. My legal team will tie your name to every dirty contract this city has ever signed. You will never work in this state again."
"Bail has been denied, Victoria," Naomi chimed in cheerfully, sliding a copy of the judge's order from her folder. "Due to the offshore accounts discovered under your son's name on Tuesday night and the evidence of flight risk involving your private charter aircraft, the state magistrate has ordered you both held until the formal arraignment on Monday morning."
Victoria’s jaw tightened so hard I heard the audible click of her teeth. The defense attorneys hurried her forward, pushing her into the waiting transport van before she could lose her composure completely on live television.
By Friday morning, the city council held its scheduled session regarding the downtown redevelopment block. The three board members who had been previously aligned with Vance Development didn't even show up for the vote; they had all resigned their seats hours earlier following a series of middle-of-the-night visits from the state ethics committee.
The zoning permits were awarded to the Sterling Trust’s non-profit development partner by a unanimous 5-0 vote.
Later that afternoon, Naomi and I sat on the terrace of a quiet café overlooking the river, two glasses of crisp white wine sitting between us. The afternoon sun was warm, filtering through the green leaves of the trees, washing away the lingering chill of the past few days.
"It’s completely over, Claire," Naomi said, raising her glass. "The forensic team found three other instances of identity theft in the Vance corporate archives dating back to 2022. They are looking at a minimum sentence of twelve years each for the federal fraud charges alone. The business is being liquidated to pay back the creditors."
I touched my glass to hers, the clean ring of the crystal a beautiful contrast to the click of the bedroom lock from Tuesday night. "Thank you, Naomi. For everything. If you hadn't answered that call three weeks ago..."
May you like
"Hey," Naomi interrupted softly, her expression turning serious. "You did the work, Claire. You were the one who had the courage to look at the truth when it hurt, and you were the one who stood your ground in that room. You saved yourself."
"No," I smiled, looking out over the quiet water. "I didn't just save myself. I cleared the stage."
