Chapter 3 - The Freeze and the Leverage

The pen hovered over the signature line for what felt like an eternity. Adrian’s hand was visibly shaking, the ink tip leaving a tiny, stuttering black dot on the crisp linen paper. His mother watched him, her jaw tight, her silence a clear indication that she was calculating the financial damage of every second that passed.
"Sign it, Adrian," Victoria finally muttered, her voice dropping into a flat, dead register.
"Mom, if I sign this, it admits the fraud clause," Adrian protested, looking up with frantic eyes. "It gives her firm the right to review our corporate communications regarding the downtown property bids. It destroys our entire leverage on the redevelopment project."
"You lost the leverage the moment you took that whip out of your suitcase, you idiot," Victoria hissed, not bothering to hide her contempt for his failure. "Sign the paper. We cut our losses and handle the restructuring internally."
With a ragged breath, Adrian pressed the pen down and scribbled his name across the line.
Naomi immediately reached out, snatched the paper back, and checked the signature against his driver's license photo on her screen. She gave me a brief, satisfied nod. "The signature is valid. Witnessed by myself and the hotel management staff present via video link. The paperwork will be filed electronically with the duty judge's clerk within the hour."
I stood up from the mahogany table, the heavy silk train of my dress pooling around my heels. "We're done here, Adrian. You have thirty minutes to clear your personal belongings out of the suite. The hotel has already deactivated your room key. A security guard will accompany you to collect your clothes."
Adrian stood up, his face twisted in a mixture of humiliation and lingering malice. "You think you've won, Claire? Fine. You avoided the marriage. But the downtown project? The city council votes on the zoning permits on Friday. Vance Development already controls three of the five board members. We will tie up your family trust’s properties in litigation for the next ten years. You won't be able to lay a single brick."
"Is that so?" I asked, walking toward the boardroom doors. "Naomi, what is the status of the Vance corporate accounts?"
Naomi smiled, her fingers dancing across her keyboard. "As of ten minutes ago, based on the preliminary evidence of financial fraud used to secure the marriage-related lines of credit, the compliance department of Apex National Bank—where I happen to sit on the advisory board—has placed a temporary administrative freeze on all accounts associated with Vance Development pending a full internal review."
Adrian gasped, looking frantically at his mother. "Mom? Is that possible?"
Victoria’s composure finally broke. She stood up so quickly her chair cascaded backward against the wall. "You frozen our corporate operating accounts? On what authority?"
"On the authority of the Bank Secrecy Act and standard anti-money laundering protocols," I said, turning back to look at them from the doorway. "Your son opened a joint marital account three days ago using my forged electronic signature to clear a two-million-dollar liquidity deficit in your firm's commercial ledger. He thought he would cover it with my trust dividends next month. Since the marriage is now legally non-existent, that account constitutes an unauthorized fraudulent transfer."
I looked at Victoria, whose perfect aristocratic facade was now completely hollowed out by financial panic. "The Friday council vote won't matter, Victoria. Because by Thursday afternoon, Vance Development won't have enough liquid capital to pay its own payroll, let alone bribe three city council members."
Without waiting for their reply, I stepped out into the quiet hallway, the heavy doors shutting behind me with a solid, definitive click.
As we walked toward the elevators, Naomi fell into step beside me, her phone pressed to her ear. "Yes, Judge Miller’s clerk? This is Naomi Vance—sorry, Naomi Vance's office. We have the signed acknowledgment for the Sterling-Vance annulment. Uploading the secure packet now."

She hung up and looked at me, her expression serious. "They're going to fight dirty now, Claire. Victoria Vance didn't build that empire by playing nice. Once she realizes her back is against the wall, she’s going to use every media connection she has to turn this into a public circus."
"Let her try," I said, watching the elevator numbers count down. "A circus only works if the ringmaster controls the animals. In this case, I've already locked the cages."
