Chapter 2 - The Exposure

The lobby seemed to shrink as Richard Sterling processed Ethan's words. He looked at Patricia and Karla, his eyes flashing with a mix of rage and terror.

"You... you did what?" Richard hissed, his voice trembling. "Do you have any idea who this is? This is Ethan Vance. He doesn't just have a reservation here. He owns this hotel. He owns the Grand Regent, the Regent Palms, the entire Vance Hospitality Group!"

The revelation hit the room like a physical blow. Patricia’s knees literally buckled, and she had to grip the edge of the desk to keep from collapsing. Karla’s mouth fell open, her face draining of all color. The man they had just insulted, the man they had tried to banish to a cheap roadside motel, was the billionaire mogul whose signature was on their paychecks.

Lupita’s eyes widened in surprise, but unlike the others, her shock wasn't born of fear. It was pure astonishment.

"Mr. Vance, I am so profoundly sorry," Patricia wept, tears finally spilling over her heavily makeup-clad cheeks. "I didn't know. If I had known who you were—"

"That is exactly the problem, Patricia," Ethan interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, filled with a cold, disappointing finality. "If I were a wealthy tech mogul in a designer suit, you would have bowed. But because I looked like a tired father grieving his wife, you treated me like trash. Hospitality isn't about how you treat the kings; it's about how you treat the weary traveler."

Ethan turned to Richard. "Tomorrow is the anniversary of my wife's passing. I came here for peace, not a corporate circus. But before I go upstairs, we are going to fix this."

"Anything, Mr. Vance. Whatever you need," Richard said, wiping sweat from his forehead.

Ethan looked at Lupita, who was standing quietly by her cart of towels. "Lupita, please come here."

The housekeeping maid stepped forward, her heart pounding. "Yes, sir?"

"While your colleagues were busy guarding a desk that I paid for, you reminded me why I built this company in the first place," Ethan said, a rare, genuine softness entering his eyes. "You saw a tired child and a broken father, and you chose kindness over corporate policy. Richard, effective immediately, Lupita is suspended from her duties in housekeeping."

Lupita’s heart sank. For a second, she thought she was being fired for stepping out of line.

"Because," Ethan continued, "starting tomorrow morning, Lupita is the new Guest Relations Manager of the Grand Regent Chicago. She will receive a full corporate salary, comprehensive benefits, and the authority to retrain this entire front desk on what the word 'hospitality' actually means."

Lupita burst into tears, covering her mouth in disbelief. "Mr. Vance... I... thank you. Thank you so much."

"As for Patricia and Karla," Ethan said, turning his icy gaze back to the two women. "Richard will handle your termination paperwork tonight. You are banned from all Vance Hospitality properties. I suggest you find a career where you don't have to interact with human beings."

Without waiting for their responses, Ethan took the keycard, adjusted Lily in his arms, and walked toward the elevators, leaving a shattered front desk in his wake.
