Chapter 4 - Cracks in the Armor

When Roman returned to the estate late that night, the house was silent. He walked up the stairs to Tessa’s room, knocking softly. When there was no answer, he gently turned the handle and pushed the door open.

Tessa was sitting on the wide window sill, her knees pulled to her chest, staring out at the rain washing over the harbor lights in the distance. She was wearing his dark grey sweater, which swallowed her small frame, making her look fragile yet remarkably serene.

"You should be sleeping," Roman said, stepping quietly into the room.

"I couldn't," she replied, turning her head toward him. "Every time I close my eyes, I hear those keys in the lock."

Roman felt a sharp pang in his chest—a strange, unfamiliar sensation for a man who had conditioned himself to feel nothing for over a decade. He walked over and sat down on the wooden ledge beside her.

"It's over," Roman said quietly. "Hodges is in federal custody. Marco Moretti will never come near you or Valorie Logistics again. You are entirely safe."

Tessa looked at him, her soft green eyes searching his stern features. "Did you hurt them?"

"I protected what is mine," Roman answered honestly, refusing to lie to her. "In my world, peace is only maintained through strength. If I show hesitation, people like Marco take everything."

"And am I yours?" Tessa asked softly, her voice barely above a whisper. The question hung in the quiet room, delicate and loaded with unsaid feelings that had built up over three years of close contact, shared coffee, and quiet, unspoken glances.

Roman looked at her, his usual air of absolute control cracking for a brief second. He reached out, his long fingers gently touching her chin, lifting her face so she had to meet his eyes.

"You have been mine since the day you walked into my office three years ago," Roman confessed, his voice rough with emotion. "I tried to keep you at a distance. I built walls, treated you like an employee, and pretended I only valued your efficiency. But the truth is, Tessa... you were the only clean, bright light in my miserable life. When I heard your voice over that burner phone today, I realized I would burn this entire city to the ground before I let anyone hurt you."

Tessa’s breath hitched. Tears welled in her eyes, not from fear, but from a profound sense of relief and realization. She leaned forward, placing her hand over his warm palm resting on her cheek.

"I was never afraid of you, Roman," she whispered. "I was only ever afraid of losing my place beside you."

Roman leaned in, closing the small distance between them, and pressed his lips gently against hers. The kiss was soft, deliberate, and filled with years of restrained passion. When he pulled back, his hand remained cradling her cheek, his thumb gently wiping away a stray tear.

"Tomorrow, everything changes," Roman murmured against her forehead. "No more secrets. No more hiding."
