Chapter 2 - The Sanctum

The Valorie estate sat high on a gated hill overlooking the bay, surrounded by dense pines and high stone walls. It was a fortress disguised as a modern architectural masterpiece—clean glass, dark stone, and warm interior lighting.

Roman guided Tessa through the grand foyer and directly into a spacious guest suite on the second floor. A short while later, Dr. Mercer, a discreet private physician who had worked for the Valorie family for decades, examined her. Aside from minor bruises on her arms and severe shock, she was unharmed.

After the doctor left, Roman re-entered the room carrying a silver tray with a pot of hot tea and a folded cashmere sweater. He had changed out of his suit into a simple black sweater and dark trousers, looking less like a crime lord and more like a man burdened by heavy thoughts.

"Drink this," he said, placing the cup on the bedside table. "It will help with the chill."

Tessa took the cup, wrapping her cold hands around the warm ceramic. "Thank you... Roman."

He paused at the sound of his first name. A subtle smile touched the corner of his lips before disappearing back into his usual stoic mask. "It sounds strange hearing you say my name without 'Mr.' in front of it."

"I can go back to 'Mr. Valorie' if you prefer," she murmured, a rare flash of her subtle wit breaking through her fatigue.

"No," Roman said, sitting on the armchair across from her bed. "Keep calling me Roman. In this house, you are not my secretary. You are my guest."

He leaned back, resting his chin on his hands, his gaze penetrating. "Tessa, I need to ask you something, and I need you to be completely honest with me."

She set her tea down. "Ask."

"For three years, you worked ten feet away from my office door. You saw men walk in with blood on their shirts. You processed payments to offshore accounts that had no logical business purpose. You knew what I was." Roman paused, his dark eyes searching her face. "Why did you stay? Why didn't you quit and find a normal job?"

Tessa looked down at her hands. The memory of three years ago flushed through her mind—the overwhelming debt after her mother passed away, the endless rejection letters, and finally, the interview with Roman Valorie. He had looked at her resume, looked her in the eye, and offered her a salary that saved her life, treating her with absolute respect from day one.

"Because you were fair," she said softly, looking up to meet his eyes. "In a world where everyone tried to take advantage of me, you treated me with respect. You paid me well, you never raised your voice, and you kept your promises. I didn't care about the rumors. I cared about the man who gave me a chance."

Roman sat motionless for a long moment. Something shifted deep within his eyes—a flicker of warmth that he rarely let anyone see.

"You are too good for this world, Tessa," he said softly. "Which is why I am going to end this thread with the Morettis quickly. They wanted a war over logistics. But now that they’ve threatened you, they’ve made it personal."

Before Tessa could respond, a knock came at the door. Matteo stepped into the room, his face solemn.

"Boss," Matteo whispered. "The Boyle brothers are getting restless downstairs at the main office. And we just got word—Marco Moretti has requested a sit-down at the Midnight Club tonight. He claims he knows nothing about Pier 41."

Roman stood up calmly, buttoning his cuffs. The warmth in his eyes instantly vanished, replaced by an absolute, icy resolve.

"Tell Marco I will be there," Roman said calmly. "And tell him to bring Hodges with him. If Hodges isn't there by midnight, there won't be a sit-down. There will only be a cleanup."

He turned back to Tessa, his voice softening once more. "Rest, Tessa. Locks are on the doors, and my best men are outside. You are safer here than anywhere else on earth."
